RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Meghan Wimmer hit her second home run of the season, but Brown University softball dropped a 12-3 decision in five innings to the University of California, Riverside on Sunday afternoon at Harrison Field.

In their final game at the Highlander Classic, the Bears (3-6) remained within 4-3 through two innings before the host Highlanders (14-6) struck for eight runs in the bottom of the third.

Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) notched her third career home run while sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) registered a double and a run scored.

Wimmer finished the tournament with a .500 batting average (7-for-14) with four RBIs, four runs, a double, a triple, and a home run.

For UC Riverside, Jenna Curtan posted a 3-for-3 effort with two runs scored. Seanna Garewal, Hannah Rodriguez, Emma Ramelot, and Brittney Garcia each posted two RBIs. Tayler Misfeldt earned the win (10-2), allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts over 4.0 innings in the start.

Wimmer took the loss (2-2), giving up eight runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Freshman Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) did not permit a hit in 1.0 inning of relief.

In the top of the first, Wimmer lifted Brown to a 2-0 lead with a two-run blast that scored Okimoto. UCR pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Okimoto pushed the Bears' edge to 3-1, hitting an RBI single through the right side to plate Cranford in the top of the second. The Highlanders gained a 4-3 edge with three runs in the bottom of the second.

The hosts brought home eight runs in the home half of the third, pulling ahead 12-3. Rodriguez, Ramelot, and Garcia each hit two-run singles in the stanza.

Next, Brown plays at the Buff & Blue Challenge in Washington, D.C., from Mar. 16-18 beginning with games against Siena (11:15 a.m.) and host George Washington (3:45 p.m.) on Friday, Mar. 16.
