
Softball Walks Off against Siena, 4-3, Falls to George Washington, 14-9

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Brown University softball rallied for a walk-off, 4-3 win over Siena College before falling to George Washington University, 14-9, in its first day of competition at GW's Buff & Blue Challenge on Friday afternoon at the GW Softball Field.
The Bears (4-7) rallied for all four of their runs in the last of the seventh to upend the Saints (2-9) in their first game of the day prior to dropping a decision to the host Colonials (17-7), who remained unbeaten (10-0) at home.
In the Bears' victory over Siena, senior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) hit a three-run double before sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) brought home the game-winning run. Against GW, senior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit her first home run of the year while junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tallied her third homer of the season.
Next, Brown continues play at the Buff & Blue Challenge tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 17, against Lafayette at 9:00 a.m. before playing a second contest in the seeded portion of the tournament.
Game 1: Brown 4, Siena 3
Senior Grayson Metzger hit a three-run double, and freshman Kaitlin Okimoto drove in the game-winning run as Brown rallied past Siena, 4-3, with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in its first game of the day on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 3-0 heading to the last of the seventh, the Bears plated four runs with no outs to earn the comeback win over the Saints.
Junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double before junior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) and senior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) each reached to load the bases. Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) then cleared the bases with her double before Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) brought home Metzger to give the Bears the walk-off win.
Freshman pitcher Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) tallied her first career win (1-0), throwing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tossed 5.0 innings in the start, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits with one strikeout.
Siena's Maddie McMahon took the loss (0-3), permitting four runs, three earned, on five hits with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Lauren Sabihon went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs at the plate.
The Saints plated one run in the top of the first on an RBI from Isabelle DeChiaro before scoring twice in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Madysen Cossack and Loryn DeFalco. The Bears then held Siena scoreless over the final two frames.
Game 2: George Washington 14, Brown 9
Senior Annie McGregor and junior Meghan Wimmer each hit a home run, but Brown fell to George Washington, 14-9, in its second game of the day on Friday afternoon.
The Bears held a 7-2 lead through three innings before the host Colonials out-scored the visitors, 12-2, over the final four frames.
Brown tallied seven extra-base hits in the game. McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit her first homer of the season and the 11th of her career while Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) notched her third homer of the year.
Freshmen Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) each registered a triple while Cranford, junior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas), and sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) all hit a double.
For GW, Alessandra Ponce went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a home run, Morgan Rinehart finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs, and three RBIs, and Jenna Cone posted a 2-for-3 effort with four RBIs.
The Colonials' Kaitlin Buff picked up the win (3-1), tossing 3.2 innings of relief and conceding just one unearned run.
The Bears struck first as Wimmer sent a two-run homer to left center in the top of the first inning. The hosts responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 2-2.
In the top of the second, McGregor lifted a solo shot to left field before Schmitz gave Brown a 4-2 edge with an RBI triple to left center. In the away half of the third, Seitz hit an RBI single, Okimoto brought home a run with a walk, and another run scored on a wild pitch as Brown moved ahead 7-2.
The Colonials answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 12-7 lead. Rinehart hit a two-run homer as part of the rally. Following an unearned run in the fifth, a solo shot from Ponce in the bottom of the sixth extended the margin to 14-7.
Brown plated two runs in the top of the seventh as Okimoto forced home a run with a walk, and a second run scored on an error.
Senior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 4.1 innings in the start, allowing seven runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) absorbed the loss (0-2).
