NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rookie Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) limited Yale to just three hits over seven innings, but the Brown baseball team fell to the Bulldogs, 7-1, in Friday afternoon's series opener at Yale Field

Brown moved to 6-11 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League. Yale, the reigning league champion, improved to 5-14, 2-2.

Garner allowed just one earned run over 7.0 innings and added five strikeouts with one walk. Scott Politz went the distance for Yale as he gave up one run over 9.0 innings to go along with 11 strikeouts.

Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) paced the Brown offense as he went 2-for-3 including a double, while Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) drove in the team's only run.

Brown jumped out to an early lead as Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) led off the game with a single, stole third and then scored on Grigo's two-out groundout to third. Yale answered in the bottom half when Tim DeGraw reached on an error and Benny Wanger followed with a two-run homer to right field.

Garner kept the Bulldogs off the board over the next six innings, holding the home side to one hit during the span. Brown threatened in the top of the seventh when Farris and Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) connected with back-to-back hits with two outs, but Politz picked up a final fly out to end the frame.

The Bulldogs padded their lead in the eighth by scoring five runs off reliever Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) for the six-run advantage heading into the final frame. Politz retired the final three outs in the top of the ninth to seal the complete game.

Brown and Yale will play a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the three-game series. The first game will start at 11:30 AM.
