
Baseball Drops Pair at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Yale, 6-4 and 5-2, to wrap up the three-game series against the Bulldogs Saturday at Yale Field.
Brown moves to 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the Ivy League, while Yale improves to 7-14, 4-2.
Game 1: Yale 6, Brown 4
Brown outhit the Bulldogs by a 12-9 margin in the first game, led by Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.), who racked up four hits and one run scored. Hunter Carey (North Hampton, N.H.) added three hits and two RBIs, while Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) also had a pair of hits.
Kumar Nambiar picked up the win for the Bulldogs as he gave up four runs over 5.1 innings as the starter, before Benny Wanger earned the save in the ninth. Brown's Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) was handed the loss after five runs in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Yale established an early lead with two runs in the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch and a fly out, and then added three runs on five hits in the fourth for the five-run advantage.
Brown broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth, as Delano, Sluys and Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) rattled of three straight hits to load the bases. After Delano crossed the plate on a walk, Carey singled home a pair of runs before Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) scored on a groundout to trim the deficit to one, 5-4.
After Yale added an insurance run in the eighth, the Bears managed a pair of singles in the ninth to put the go-ahead run at the plate, but Wanger picked up the final groundout to secure the win.
Game 2: Yale 5, Brown 2
Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Carey paced the Bears in the second game with two hits apiece, while Ciufo also added one RBI.
Delano took the loss on the hill as he gave up four earned runs over 5.1 innings to go along with five strikeouts. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) and Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) combined for three frames of hitless relief work out of the bullpen. Eric Brodkowitz went eight innings to pick up the win for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs before Tyler Sapsford came in for the save.
Brown opened the scoring in the top of the third when Ciufo sent home Carey with a single to center field. Yale answered with five runs over the next three frames to move out in front by four, 5-1.
The Bears posted a trio of hits in the top of the ninth, including a one-run single by Farris, but the home side tagged out a runner at third on the play and followed with consecutive outs to secure the series sweep.
Brown will host Hartford on Wednesday (3 PM) to kick off an eight-game homestand.
