PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning, but Penn chipped away for the comeback win as the Bears fell, 9-8, in the three-game series finale Sunday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

Brown (6-8, 2-1) won the series against Penn after sweeping both ends of the doubleheader on Saturday, 7-6 and 4-1, to open Ivy League play. Penn moves to 5-13 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Brown had six players with multiple-hit games, while Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) also had two RBIs apiece. Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) hit .364 and .333 in the series, respectively.

Delano started on the mound and gave up five earned runs in five innings with five strikeouts. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) was saddled with the loss as he allowed one run over two innings of work out for the bullpen. Grant Guillory earned the win in relief for the Quakers and Jacob Sadowitz pitched a two-out save.

After Penn scored one run in the first inning, Brown exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the frame, using nine hits to post a seven-run advantage. Ciufo had a pair of RBI singles and Lomuscio belted a two-run triple to right field to highlight the inning.

Penn responded with five runs on six hits in the third inning to close the gap to two runs. Matt McGeagh then scored on an error in the fifth and hit an RBI single in the sixth to tie the game, 8-8. The Quakers took the lead in the eighth inning when Sean Phelan hit a one-out double to left center and then crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.

Homza gave the Bears some life with a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth, but Sadowitz came back with consecutive strikeouts to secure the win.

Brown will host Bryant on Tuesday in nonconference action at 3 PM.
