PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team rallied for a walk-off win in extra innings in the first game, 7-6, and then cruised to a 4-1 victory in the second game, as the Bears swept Penn in a doubleheader on Saturday to open the three-game series at Murray Stadium.
Brown (6-7, 2-0 Ivy) opened the Ivy League season with a pair of wins and will go for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 pm. Penn moved to 4-13 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Game 1: Brown 7, Penn 6 (10 Innings)
Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) lifted the Bears to victory in the opener with a walk-off single in the tenth inning.  He finished with two RBIs and also earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) also drove in two runs. Rookie Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) gave up six runs over six innings as the starter, adding three strikeouts, before JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) came in for two innings of hitless work. Christian Scafidi took the loss for the Quakers despite one earned run in five innings out of the bullpen.
After Penn struck first with one run in the first, Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) answered with a solo homer in the second. Penn came back with four runs on four hits in the second, but the Bears took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom half, scoring three times to trim the deficit to one.
The two teams scored one run apiece over the next two frames, before the bullpens settled in for three straight scoreless innings. Nevertheless, Deere hit a two-out RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. After a pair of Penn errors gave Brown two base runners in scoring position in the tenth, Farris hit a single through the right side to secure the walk-off win.
Game 2: Brown 4, Penn 1
Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) threw six scoreless innings in the second game to pick up his second win of the season. Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) provided two innings of relief work before Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) came in for the save.
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) posted two hits and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) added a pair of RBIs.
Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) opened the scoring in the third inning with an RBI single to right field. Brown added three more runs in the fifth, all unearned, as Delano scored on a passed ball and Sluys hit a two-run single to center.
Matt O'Neill hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for the only Quaker run of the contest.
Brown will go for the sweep in the series finale tomorrow at 1 PM.
