DALLAS, Texas – Rookie Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) recorded three hits and also drove in a pair of runs as the Brown baseball team downed Dallas Baptist, 9-5, in Sunday's series finale at Horner Ballpark.
Brown (4-7) used a big five-run eighth inning to gain separation from the Patriots and secure the win. Before the series finale, Dallas Baptist (11-7) won the conclusion of game two on Sunday, which was suspended in the seventh inning on Saturday due to lightning.
Lomuscio, one of three Brown players with multiple hits, went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and two RBIs. Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) had two hits apiece, while Homza, Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) all drove in two runs.
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) grabbed the win for the Bears as he went five innings as the starter and allowed three earned runs. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) provided 2.1 innings of relief, before rookie Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Jarod Bayless took the loss for the Patriots in relief.
Brown scored three runs on four hits in the top of the second, as Homza hit an RBI single to left and Grigo followed with a two-run single through the left side, but the Patriots answered with one run in each of the next three innings to tie the game.
The Bears regained the lead in the fifth inning. Ciufo drew a leadoff walk, worked his way around the bases and then crossed the plate on a passed ball for the 4-3 lead.
Brown opened up the scoring with five runs in the top of the eighth inning, starting when Homza sent home Delano with a double down the right field line. Lomuscio hit a two-run single one batter later, before Cifuo crushed a two-run homer over the left field fence with two outs for his first home run of the season.
DBU came back with two runs in the bottom half, and then made it interesting by loading the bases to put the tying run at the plate, but Vasquez got out of the jam as he forced Garrett Wolforth to groundout to end the frame. Vasquez then pitched a 1-2-3 to seal the victory.
Brown will open Ivy League play at Penn this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one will start at 11:30 AM.
