PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal and rookie Maxwell Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) earned a shutout as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Yale, 1-0, on Saturday's home finale at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (8-7-1, 2-4-0 Ivy) recognized seniors Gabe Welp (West Chester, Ohio), Justin O'Brien (Montclair, N.J.) and Howell before the match. Yale moved to 6-6-3, 1-3-2.
"I'm really proud of the guys on senior day and for all three of them to have a massive role in the win," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "Gabe Welp leading and being the captain, Justin stepping in and playing so many critical moments by winning the ball against the wind in the second half, and then Toby getting the game-winning goal."
Waldeau made two saves in his first career shutout. Elian Haddock had two saves on the other side for the Bulldogs.
Howell put the Bears on the board in the 29th minute, as he finished a quick pass from Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) with a one-timer into the back of the net, scoring his fourth Ivy goal of the season. Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) also picked up an assist on the play.
The two teams combined for seven shots in the opening half. Howell had another bid early in the second stanza but Haddock corralled the shot to prevent a two-goal deficit.
Yale increased its number of scoring opportunities during the final 20 minutes of regulation, but the Brown defense held the Bulldogs to just one shot on target in the period. Yale's final shot by Aldo Quevedo went wide of the net with five minutes left in regulation as the Bears secured the shutout.
Howell led the Bears with two shots in the game.
"I'm thrilled for those guys to end on a victory at home and then for us to go up and play one more game together as a team," said Laughlin.
Brown will visit Dartmouth next Saturday at 5 PM.
