Viruet Wins Weight Class to Pace Wrestling at 2018 Navy Classic
11/17/2018 10:01:00 PM | Wrestling
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Jon Viruet won the 165-pound weight class, claiming his second tournament title in as many outings to open the season and pacing the Bears at the 2018 Navy Classic on Saturday at the Wesley Brown Field House.
Â
As a team the Bears tallied 31 wins and 18 bonus-point wins, including three falls, four technical falls, and 11 major decisions. Brown sent five wrestlers to quarterfinal matches and advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals.
Â
"Today was another tough test at the 41st Navy Classic, and I was pleased with our team's performance," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We are continuing to improve in the areas that we have been working on in practice, and it is showing in our matches. I am especially happy to leave the tournament with a Navy Classic Champion for the second year in a row."
Â
Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) – ranked No. 18 in the nation at 165 pounds – registered four straight victories to claim the tournament title. He won the 165-pound weight class at the Bearcat Open on Nov. 17. On his way to the Navy Classic title, he posted a fall, technical fall, and a major decision. He also placed at the event in 2016.
Â
Viruet's victory marks the second consecutive year that a Bear has won a Navy Classic title. Last year, CJ LaFragola '19 (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) won the 184-pound weight class at the event.
Â
Sophomore Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) joined Viruet as a placer, finishing in fourth place at 174 pounds. Rogers picked up three wins on the day, including a major decision victory.
Â
Senior Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) won three bouts at 197 pounds, and senior Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) picked up three victories at 285 pounds.
Â
Seniors Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) and Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.), juniors Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.), sophomores Hunter Kosco (Canal Fulton, Ohio) and Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.), and freshman Cade Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) tallied two wins apiece.
Â
In the team standings, Brown came in 10th place out of 16 schools with 54 points. Michigan State won the team title behind 124 points.
Â
"We learned a lot from this competition and will get back to work this week before giving the team a nice rest and recovery to spend time with family over Thanksgiving," Beckerman said.
Â
Next, Brown will compete at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., from Friday, Nov. 30 to Saturday, Dec. 1.
