Fencing Teams Compile 9-3 Record at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's fencing registered a 6-1 record, and the men's team tallied a 3-2 mark as the Bears combined for a 9-3 overall record at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1 on Saturday at MIT's Johnson Athletic Center.

"Today was a fantastic performance by the Brown Bears men's and women's fencing teams," Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. "Our women's sabre squad went undefeated in a tough field, and the women's team finished the day at 6-1, while the men turned in a 3-2 performance. All in all, it was a great start to the 2018 campaign!"

The women's team earned victories over Boston University (22-5), Sacred Heart (15-10), Smith (26-1), New Hampshire (25-2), Massachusetts (25-2), and Wellesley (14-13), while dropping a narrow 14-13 decision to Boston College.

The men's side picked up wins over Boston University (18-9), New Hampshire (20-7), and Massachusetts (18-9), while falling to Sacred Heart (15-12) and Boston College (19-8).

At the squad level, the Bears' women's sabre unit went 7-0 overall with a 53-10 composite mark. Women's foil finished 6-1 (50-13 composite), and women's epee went 5-2 (40-23). For the men, men's sabre went 4-1 (24-21), and men's foil and men's epee both went 3-2 with 29-16 and 23-22 composite marks respectively.

Sophomore Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Bears with a 17-3 record in women's sabre. Also in women's sabre, junior Sabrina Edelman (New York, N.Y.) went 11-2. Sophomore Elena Jin (Fremnont, Calif.) registered a 15-2 record in women's foil, freshman Anna Susini (Lexington, Ky.) posted a 15-3 mark in women's foil, and sophomore Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) tallied a 13-6 mark in women's epee.

Senior Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) led the men's side with a 13-2 record in men's foil. Sophomore Nathan Sinai (Merion Station, Pa.) paced men's epee with an 11-4 mark, and sophomores Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) and Levon Brunson (Newton, Mass.) both went 12-3 in men's sabre.

Next, Brown competes at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 2 in Waltham, Mass.
