Bouscaren, Rawlings Propel Men’s Water Polo Past No. 12 Princeton, 11-10

Bears Finish the NWPC Weekend with a 3-0 Record
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Travis Bouscaren and junior Hudson Rawlings each scored a hat trick as Brown University men's water polo topped No. 12 Princeton University, 11-10, on Sunday morning at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
In their Northeast Water Polo Conference home opener, the Bears (11-7, 4-2 NWPC) took a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and responded to each comeback attempt from the Tigers (10-6, 3-4 NWPC) the rest of the way.
The Bears finished the weekend with a 3-0 record coming off victories over No. 7 Harvard (11-9) and MIT (11-10, OT) on Saturday. Brown opened the second half of NWPC play with a win over the Tigers in its first home game since Sept. 14.
Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) scored three goals a day after netting the game-winning goal in overtime against MIT. Bouscaren and Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) finished the weekend with six and five goals respectively.
Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted two goals, two assists, and two field blocks while junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) totaled a goal, four assists, four steals, and two ejections drawn.
Freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) notched a goal and four ejections drawn, senior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) netted a goal, and junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) each dished out two assists.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made nine saves, including five stops in the second half.
Brown jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter behind goals from Bouscaren, Simko, and Nunez. Bouscaren started the scoring on a turnaround shot off a feed from Nunez before Simko converted on the inside off a pass from Reilly. Nunez concluded the quarter's scoring with a goal from beyond five meters.
After Princeton netted the second stanza's first goal, back-to-back tallies from Bouscaren and Rawlings from the five-meter mark pushed Brown ahead 5-1 with 3:21 to play in the half. A Carroll goal off an assist from Deirmenjian helped Brown maintain a 6-3 edge at halftime.
Deirmenjian netted a goal from past five meters to give Brown a 7-4 advantage with 6:00 left in the third quarter prior to Princeton scoring twice in the frame's final 63 seconds to trim the margin to 7-6 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth frame, Bouscaren scored on the inside off a feed from Thygesen to stake Brown to an 8-6 lead with 5:05 left. Inside of the game's final four minutes, Rawlings twice answered goals from the Tigers to keep Brown ahead 10-8 with 1:58 to play. Princeton pulled within 10-9 with 1:36 remaining, but Carroll countered with a goal from five meters off a pass from Deirmenjian, extending Brown's lead to 11-9. The Tigers netted the game's final goal on a 5-meter penalty shot with 22 seconds to go.
Brown evened the season series with Princeton at 1-1 after the Bears fell to the Tigers, 16-11, on Sept. 29 at the Tigers' DeNunzio Pool.
Next, Brown will compete in the Harvard Invitational with match-ups on ESPN+ against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Oct. 13, 12:00 p.m.), Toronto (Oct. 13, 5:00 p.m., exhibition), No. 18 Wagner (Oct. 14, 8:00 a.m.), and No. 20 Bucknell (Oct. 14, 2:00 p.m.).
