CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Travis Bouscaren and juniors Armen Deirmenjian and James Thygesen each scored three goals as No. 13 Brown University men's water polo topped Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 13-8, on Saturday afternoon at Blodgett Pool.
Playing in their first game at the Harvard Invitational, the Bears (12-7) earned a 6-2 lead at halftime and finished the game on a 3-1 run on their way to the win over the Stags (10-4), extending their winning streak to five games with their victory over the No. 2 ranked team in Division III.
Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.), Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.), and Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with a hat trick apiece. Thygesen added two assists and a steal while Deirmenjian chipped in two steals.
Junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) totaled a goal, three assists, two field blocks, three ejections drawn and a steal. Freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) tallied a goal, an assist, and three ejections drawn. Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) finished with a goal, a steal, and an assist, and junior Will Collier (Darien, Conn.) netted a goal.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made two saves in the first half, and freshman goalie Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) stopped five shots in the second half.
Simko started the game's scoring off a rebound just over a minute into the contest before CMS knotted the score at 1-1. Rawlings and Thygesen answered with back-to-back power play goals to lift the Bears to a 3-1 advantage. Deirmenjian closed the quarter's scoring, converting a five-meter penalty shot, to give the Bears a 4-2 lead at the end of one.
The Bears scored the only two goals of the second quarter as Deirmenjian scored off a feed from Thygesen at the period's 2:37 mark and Bouscaren found the back of the net with six seconds to play in the half.
Following a pair of Stag tallies to open the third quarter, Thygesen and Carroll countered with consecutive goals to extend Brown's lead to 8-4 with 2:53 left in the third. Bouscaren scored before Thygesen netted a 5-meter penalty shot as the Bears took a 10-6 edge into the final frame.
After a CMS marker initiated the fourth quarter's scoring, Bouscaren and Deirmenjian notched back-to-back goals to stake Brown to a 12-7 advantage with 3:04 to play. Collier closed the contest's scoring with a goal from beyond five meters.
The Bears also defeated the University of Toronto, 13-7, in an exhibition match in the afternoon.
Next, Brown completes play at the Harvard Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 14, with match-ups on ESPN+ against No. 20 Wagner (8:00 a.m.) and No. 17 Bucknell (2:00 p.m.).
