Men’s Water Polo Sweeps Past No. 7 Harvard, MIT in NWPC Play

Bears Beat Crimson, 11-9, Edge MIT in Overtime, 11-10
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University men's water polo beat No. 7 Harvard University, 11-9, and edged MIT in overtime, 11-10, in a pair of Northeast Water Polo Conference games on Saturday at Blodgett Pool and the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center respectively.
Completing the first half of NWPC play, the Bears (10-7, 3-2 NWPC) used a 4-0 run to start the third quarter to upend the nationally ranked Crimson (11-4, 3-1 NWPC) and held off a comeback from the Engineers (5-8, 1-4 NWPC) in their second game of the day.
Junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with five goals on the day while senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) each netted four goals. Senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) posted the game-winning goal in overtime against MIT.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made 12 saves against Harvard, and freshman goalie Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) stopped 12 shots against MIT.
Next, Brown hosts No. 12 Princeton University tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 7, at 10:00 a.m. (ESPN+) at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Game 1 – Brown 11, No. 7 Harvard 9
Juniors Armen Deirmenjian and James Thygesen each scored a hat trick as Brown defeated No. 7 Harvard, 11-9, on Saturday morning at Blodgett Pool.
The Bears used a 4-0 run to start the third quarter to turn a 6-5 halftime deficit into a 9-6 lead on their way to the victory over the top-10 ranked Crimson.
Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) added two steals and three ejections drawn to his three goals while Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted three assists and two steals alongside his three goals.
Senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) notched two goals, an assist, and two field blocks, senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) totaled a goal, three assists, and two steals, and sophomore Adam Fuller (Santa Barbara, Calif.) registered a goal and two steals. Junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) scored a goal, and junior Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas) dished out two assists.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made 12 saves with a steal.
In the first quarter, Thygesen answered a pair of Harvard tallies with two goals of his own as the two sides stood tied at 2-2 after the opening stanza.
Back-to-back goals from Deirmenjian pushed Brown ahead 4-3 with 3:09 remaining in the second quarter. The Crimson took a 5-4 lead after converting a 5-meter penalty shot before a goal from Rawlings knotted the score at 5-5. Harvard brought a 6-5 edge into halftime.
The Bears netted the first four goals of the second half turning a 6-5 halftime deficit into a 9-6 lead late in the third quarter. Fuller started the run with a goal at the 4:05 mark before Deirmenjian found the back of the net. Bouscaren and Thygesen closed the streak as Brown went up 9-6 with 1:22 to play in the period. A Harvard goal with 15 seconds left cut the margin to 9-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
After Harvard pulled within 9-8 with 6:18 remaining, Carroll scored on the power play to extend Brown's lead to 10-8 with 4:01 to go. A goal from Bouscaren gave the visitors an 11-8 edge with 56 seconds left before Harvard posted the game's final goal with 10 seconds on the clock.

The Bears gained a 9-6 lead entering the fourth quarter and won the game with a game-winning goal in overtime after the Engineers sent the game to bonus play tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation.
Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) added two assists and four field blocks to his three goals while junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) posted two goals and two steals. Senior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) netted two goals.
Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) registered two assists alongside his game winner, and junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) totaled a goal, two assists, and two steals.

After neither side scored in the first period of overtime, Bouscaren found the back of the net with 42 seconds left in the second bonus session to lift the Bears to the win.
