Providence, R.I. – Playing in a classic New England Nor'easter with winds gusting up to 50 miles-per-hour, Brown and Penn slogged through the slippery natural turf at Brown Stadium with the Quakers holding on for a 13-7 win over the Bears behind 246 rushing yards by Karekin Brooks.
"We fought for the entire game and were still fighting in the last minute," said Brown head coach Phil Estes. "I'm not worried about the scoreboard, I care about our team. Some of our players are getting their first varsity experience. When we learn how to make a few more plays we'll win."
On a difficult day to throw the ball, Bears quarterback Michael McGovern (St. Louis, MO) had all of his 93 passing yards in the second half, completing 9-of-19 passes overall. He threw a fourth quarter 20-yard touchdown pass to Jakob Prall (Tipp City, OH). Sophomore Scott Boylan (Bakersfield, CA) (44 yards) and junior LJ Harriott (Central Islip, NY) (40 yards) paced the Brown running attack.
Sophomore Davis Bak (Tampa, FL) paced the Bears defense with a career high 12 tackles, while forcing a fumble. Senior Daniel Aidman (Austin, TX) had nine tackles, including a tackle for loss, and junior Michael Hoecht Oakwood, OH) made eight tackles. Junior Brendan Pyne (Bradenton, FL) had 3.5 tackles for a loss of 10 yards, making seven tackles overall.
One of the bright spots for the Bears was the punting of senior Ryan Kopec (Alpharetta, GA), who got off a 72 yard punt, the eight longest in Brown football history.
The story of the day for Penn was the running of Brooks, who had 170 of his 246 yards in the first half. The Quakers used two quarterbacks, Ryan Glover, who completed 4-of-8 passes for 20 yards, and Nick Robinson, who connected on 6-of-7 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Penn had the better of play in the opening 30 minutes, out-gaining the Bears by a 257-49 margin in yards, while building a 13-0 halftime lead. Jack Soslow kicked field goals of 21 and 23 yards, while Robinson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Steve Farrell.
The Bears' defense kept the Quakers in check during the second half, limiting Penn to 113 second half yards.
Brown got on the scoreboard with 27 seconds left in the game when McGovern spotted Prall in the corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. The Bears drove 65 yards in five plays to pull to within 13-7.
Brown returns to New Haven, Conn., for the second straight season to battle Yale at the Yale Bowl on Saturday, November 3. Kick-off is 1:00 pm on ESPN+.
