PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) posted his second clean sheet of the season as the Brown men's soccer team played Hofstra to a scoreless draw Tuesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (7-6-1) recorded a tie for the first time this season to wrap up non-conference play. Hofstra moved to 7-5-4 overall.
Gross made five saves for the Bears, posting at least five saves for the second time this season, while Leonard Arkhanhelskyi matched his effort with five stops for the Pride.
Hofstra held a slight 9-8 shot advantage in the first half, but the Bears managed three shots on target in the period. John Vrablic (Avon, Ohio) had an early chance in the third minute before rookie Derek Waleffe (Madison, Wis.) blasted a shot at 18:20 that just nicked the post and went wide.
The two teams combined for nine shots in the second half. Senior Justin O'Brien (Montclair, N.J.) had the best chance for the Bears when he rifled a deep shot that hit the crossbar.
Brown had the only shot in the first overtime period as the rain picked up during extra time. In the second overtime, Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) broke free for a good look but Arkhanhelskyi corralled the bid, before Gross returned the favor on the other end as the keeper denied Luke Brown with three minutes remaining.
Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) came up with another attempt during the final seconds but Arkhanhelskyi made the save to secure the draw.
Hofstra led in shots, 19-17. Waleffe paced the Bears with five shots.
Brown will visit Penn on Saturday at 7 PM.
