PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) netted the equalizer in the 86th minute to force extra time, but the Brown men's soccer team fell to Penn, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday at Rhodes Field.
Brown (7-7-1, 1-4-0) and Penn (3-4-6, 1-3-1) were even with 12 shots apiece in a game that was rescheduled from Saturday due to weather and field conditions.
"The team played some excellent stuff today but were unable to come up with the win," said Brown head coach Patrick Laughlin. "Great fight back after going down a goal to equalize but the winner wouldn't come for us."
Sophomore Max Gross (Halifax, Nova Scotia) made one save in net for the Bears. Scott Forbes turned away five shots on the other end.
The two teams played a scoreless opening half as the Bears led in shots, 6-3.
Penn broke through in the 56th minute, when Alex Touche knocked home a header on a feed from Anthony Rovito, giving the home side the one-goal lead.
The Quakers held the Bears at bay for most of the second half, but Bruno rallied for the equalizer at 85:50, as Howell scored on a pass from Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) for his third tally of the season. Will Hayward (Torrance, Calif.) started the play and also earned an assist.
Schiller had the only shot on target in the first overtime, but Forbes turned away the bid to maintain the score.
Jake Kohlbrenner scored the game winner 49 seconds into the second overtime when he blasted a shot from the left side.
Schiller led the Bears with four shots.
Brown will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3 (3:30 PM) when it hosts Yale on senior day.
