PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Coming off its best season in the last decade, Brown University wrestling will prepare for the EIWA and NCAA Championships in March with a 2018-19 schedule that allows the Bears to compete against elite competition in events across the country, head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Friday.
"Following up on a successful 2017-18 season, we want to ensure that our student-athletes have the opportunity to test themselves against the nation's best," Beckerman said. "Our 2018-19 schedule will give our wrestlers a chance to meet top non-conference opponents, face nationally ranked wrestlers within our own league, and compete in front of our strong alumni support."
The Bears enjoyed a banner year in 2017-18 as Brown tied for second in the Ivy League standings, its highest finish since 1997, and posted three Ivy League wins, its most since 2009. The Bears totaled three NCAA qualifiers for the first time since 2008 and tallied six EIWA placers, their most since 2010.
With its 2018-19 schedule, Brown will compete at multiple prestigious tournaments, including the Cliff Keen Invitational and Midlands Championships, travel to the state of North Carolina to meet both Duke and NC State, and take on several EIWA foes during the dual season as the program preps for its championship events in March.
"Each season we want our student-athletes to face high-level competition during the tournament and dual seasons so that when we hit March, they are ready to compete for championships," Beckerman said. "We feel that our 2018-19 schedule will have our wrestlers well prepared to put their best efforts forward at the EIWA and NCAA championships."
After their unofficial opening at the Brown & White Wrestle-Offs on Nov. 3, the Bears will begin their season at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Nov. 11. Brown will then complete its tournament season with the Navy Classic (Nov. 17), Cliff Keen Invitational (Nov. 30 to Dec. 1), Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), and Franklin & Marshall Open (Jan. 5).
Brown gets its dual season underway in the state of North Carolina with road meets against Davidson (Jan. 11), NC State (Jan. 12), and Duke (Jan. 12).
The Bears then host five dual meets over the next two weekends when they welcome Army West Point (Jan. 17), Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 19), Bucknell (Jan. 19), Cornell (Jan. 26), and Binghamton (Jan. 26) to the Pizzitola Sports Center. As part of those two weekends, Brown will open its EIWA slate against Army, take on Cornell in its Ivy opener, and meet Binghamton in its annual combined meet with Brown gymnastics. Bruno will close that stretch at the JWU Wildcat Open on Jan. 27.
Moving into February, Brown will start the month at Penn (Feb. 2) and at Princeton (Feb. 2) before hosting Columbia (Feb. 16) and Hofstra (Feb. 16) for Senior Day and the program's Alumni & Family Weekend. The Bears close their dual schedule at Harvard (Feb. 21) and at home against Sacred Heart (Feb. 23).
The 2019 EIWA Championships will take place in Vestal, N.Y., at Binghamton University from March 8-9. The 2019 NCAA Championships are set for PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa., from March 21-23.
