PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ryan Scarfo scored both goals for Union as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Dutchmen, 2-0, in Saturday night's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown split the weekend to move to 6-11-3 overall and 5-9-0 in the ECAC. Union improved to 14-12-1, 10-4-0.
Darion Hanson stopped all 20 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) recorded 26 saves for the Bears on the other end.
Brown benefited from a pair of power plays in the first frame, but Union killed off both penalties to keep the game scoreless. Union outshot the Bears, 8-5, in the first period.
After a scoreless opening period, Scarfo put the Dutchmen on the board with a power-play goal at 6:04 in the second frame, as he backhanded a rebound past Kania for the one-goal advantage. Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) had four shots for the Bears in the second period.
Brown was called for a five-minute major in the opening half of the third period, and managed to kill 4:30 of the penalty, but Scarfo broke through at 12:56 with his second goal of the game for the two-goal lead.
After Brown pulled Kania for the extra skater, Hanson denied a pair of late bids from Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) and Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) to secure the shutout.
Lafferty paced the Bears with six shots.
Brown will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games at St. Lawrence (1/26) and No. 2 Clarkson (1/27).
