
Softball Closes Out Five-Game Stint at Madeira Beach Tournament

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Brown University softball fell to Army West Point, 3-2, and to Georgetown University, 5-3, on the third and final day of the Madeira Beach Tournament on Sunday on Field 3.
The Bears (0-5) rallied in the bottom of the seventh in both games, scoring all five of their runs on the day in that frame, before the Black Knights (6-4) and Hoyas (3-11) held on for wins in both contests.
Senior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) went 4-for-8 with a double and run scored between the two games. Freshman Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) registered a 3-for-4 effort with a run against Army while sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 3-for-3 with a double and run against Georgetown.
In the circle, the Bears allowed just one earned run on the day with junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) and sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) pitching complete games against Army and Georgetown respectively.
Next, Brown returns to the state of Florida to play five games in the Florida Atlantic University Tournament from Mar. 10-12. The Bears will open play at the tournament on Friday, Mar. 10 with games against Ball State (11:15 a.m.) and host FAU (3:45 p.m.).
Game 1: Army West Point 3, Brown 2
Orona did not allow an earned run in a complete game, and senior Sarah Syrop hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, but Brown fell to Army West Point, 3-2, in its first game of the day at the Madeira Beach Tournament.
Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs, Blanchard finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Andrews posted a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored.
Orona pitched all seven innings, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and five walks with five strikeouts in her second complete game in as many starts (0-2).
Trailing 3-0 entering the last of the seventh, Andrews led off the inning with a single, and Blanchard followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. After the Bears loaded the bases on an error, Syrop sent a two-run double to right center with two outs before the Black Knights recorded the final out.
Army's Kristen West (1-0) earned the win, tossing 4.2 innings and giving up no runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Caroline Smith tallied her first save of the season, permitting two unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings.
The Black Knights scratched across an unearned run in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead and added two more unearned runs in the top half of the seventh with a double from Emily Ballesteros highlighting the frame.
The Bears threatened in several innings earlier in the game, placing multiple runners on base in each of the second, third, fourth, and fifth frames.
Andrews led off the first with a single and advanced to third before the Black Knights escaped the jam. In the second, Syrop and junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) put runners on first and second with a walk and single respectively before Army closed the inning.
Freshman Sarah Fringer (Macomb Township, Mich.) and Blanchard walked and singled to give the Bears first and second in the bottom of the third, and in the fourth Brown advanced runners to second and third before Army avoided any damage in both stanzas. In the fifth, Blanchard and junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) both singled with one out prior to the Black Knights again escaping unscathed.
Game 2: Georgetown 5, Brown 3
Brown rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Georgetown held on for a 5-3 win in the Bears' fifth and final game at the Madeira Beach Tournament.
The Bears trailed 4-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after the second frame before not allowing a run the rest of the way and making their rally in the last of the seventh.
Seitz went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and run scored while Andrews finished 2-for-4 with a double. Syrop, sophomore Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.), and freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) drove in one run apiece.
Wimmer threw her first career complete game, striking out four while permitting five runs, one earned, on 10 hits and four walks in the loss (0-2).
The Bears rallied in the home half of the seventh as Seitz led off the inning with a double to center field. Fringer followed with a single to left before Scarangella brought Seitz home with a pinch-hit RBI single. Andrews then singled prior to Okimoto working a walk to send a run home. Syrop drove in Brown's last run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Georgetown opened the game with four unearned runs in the top of the first with Noelle Holiday, Gabriela Elvina, Sera Stevens, and Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida all collecting one RBI each. The Hoyas extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the second on an RBI single to left from Elvina.
Anna Brooks Pacha took the win (3-3), hurling five shutout innings on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Katie Vannicola tossed two innings in relief, giving up three runs, all earned, on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
