
Men's Swimming & Diving Swims Past MIT, 192-103

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated MIT, 192-103, in its home opening meet at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.
"Being at home at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center always brings out the best in our young men," said head coach Chris Ip. "Our freshman saw first-hand what kind of intensity comes with a home meet, and they soaked up the experience."
Senior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) won the 1000 freestyle with his fastest time of this season (9:34.52). He also took third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.34. Sophomore Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) took second in both the 500 (4:41.59) and 1000 (9:40.51) freestyle, and freshman Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) finished fourth in the 1000 in an in-season best time (9:49.47). Senior Talbot Jacobs (Orinda, Calif.) added a fifth place finish in the 500 (4:48.98).
Freshman Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) won both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle with times of 1:41.12 and 4:41.42, respectively. He also placed fourth in the 200 IM (1:55.72). Sophomore Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) placed second in the 200 freestyle to Lincoln in 1:42.39, and was closely followed by an in-season best time by Liam Hollowsky in the event (1:42.83).
Sophomore Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) went 1-2 in both backstroke events with times of 51.46 and 51.78, respectively, in the 100 and marks of 1:52.00 and 1:53.48 in the 200.
Junior Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.) added a win in the 100 breaststroke (57:01), while freshman Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.68).
Sophomore Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) (1:52.16), freshman Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (1:52.99) and junior William Steele (Katy, Texas) (1:54.31) finished 1-2-4 in the 200 butterfly. Park (1:52.83) and Sung (1:54.92) also took first and second, respectively, in the 200 IM. W. Steele, on the other hand, teamed up with his brother, junior Charles Steele (Katy, Texas), to take a 1-2 (50.37, 50.57) finish in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) won both the 50 and 100 freestyle (20.60 - 50, 45.26 - 100) to lead a team of sprint corps that took 1-2 in the 50, with sophomore Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) claiming second place (21.04), and a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 with Smilenov (45.96) and Stephens (46:05).
On the boards, senior Bryce Campanelli (Palmyra, Va.) led a 2-3-4 finish for the Bears on the 1M, with a score of 286.28, while sophomore William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and freshman Ivan Ip (Rosemead, Calif.) recorded scores of 273.23 and 260.55, respectively. Ip stepped up on the 3M to take second (286.96), and led Campanelli (276.90) and McNelis (243.75) to another 2-3-4 finish on the 3M.
Bruno also took first place on both relays, going 1-2 on the final 200 freestyle relay with Cline, Sullivan, Stephens and W. Steele finishing in 1:23.00. The event saw the top three teams all within half of a second of each other.
"We are happy with the completing of our fall dual meet preparation cycle and will now shift our focus towards preparing for the Big AL Invite at Princeton in December," said Ip. "Our Ivy League Championships will also be held at Princeton, so we're excited for this Invite to provide our young team with some invaluable experience."
The Bears next compete at the Big Al Invitational, hosted by Princeton, on Friday, Dec. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 3.
