
Men's Swimming & Diving Falls to Columbia, 190-110

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team was defeated by Columbia, 190-110, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.
"The team had a solid meet against Columbia today," said head coach Chris Ip. "This was the first dual meet of the 2018 calendar year, and it took us a few events to find our footing. I was happy to see our performances in the second half of the meet improve as we adjusted and dialed in on our details."
Brown took second and third in the 200 medley relay. The relay team of sophomore Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), sophomore Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas), junior William Steele (Katy, Texas), and sophomore Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) placed second in 1:31.01 while the group of sophomore Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.), freshman Max Pokutta (Palo Alto, Calif.), junior Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) and junior Charles Steele (Katy, Texas) earned a third place finish in 1:33.09, out touching Columbia's B relay by .08 of a second.
Freshman Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) (9:43.20) swam a season best time in the 1000 freestyle to take third place. Sophomore Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) (9:43.30) finished fourth.
Fellow freshman Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) (1:41.14) took third in the 200 freestyle, leading the way for the Bears, with junior Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (1:43.19) finishing in fourth.
Sung won two events for the Brown, taking the 100 backstroke (49.92) and 100 butterfly (49.32). Following Sung and scoring in the 100 backstroke was Sullivan in fourth (51.80). In the 100 butterfly, W. Steele (50.30) was behind Sung in third while N. Brown (51.09) came in fourth.
Pokutta took fifth in the 100 breaststroke for the Bears, with a 59.06. Pokutta also finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.94) ahead of sophomore Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) (2:08.87) in fifth.
Junior Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took second in the 200 butterfly (1:53.90). Not far behind him was freshman Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) in third (1:54.01) and W. Steele in fourth (1:54.49).
Cline was able to place second in the 50 freestyle (20.55) before taking the win in the 100 freestyle (45.02). Also swimming both events was Smilenov, who took fourth in the 50 (20.82) and third in the 100 (45.92). Sophomore Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) scored in the 100 with a 46.30, good enough for fourth.
Sullivan took second in the 200 backstroke (1:51.60) ahead of N. Brown (1:53.30) in fourth, and freshman Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) in fifth (1:55.17).
Finishing 2-3-4 for the Bears in the 500 Freestyle was Li (4:42.79), Lincoln (4:43.07) and Pestorius (4:46.10).
Park was the highest finisher in the 200 IM, taking second with a 1:53.17. Orringer followed behind him with a fourth place finish of 1:55.77.
On the boards, the Bears took fifth on the 1M with freshman Ivan Ip (Rosemead, Calif.) (242.03) and sophomore William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) took fifth on the 3M.
The final 400 freestyle relay team of Cline, Sung, W. Steele, and Smilenov (3:01.13) were out-touched in a tight race to end the meet. But, the Bears "B" Relay team of Stephens, Lincoln, Hollowsky, and Li fought their way to a third place finish in the event with a 3:06.92.
The Bears next wrap up the regular at Cornell on Friday, Jan. 26 (5:00 pm.) and Saturday, Jan. 27 (12:00 p.m.).
