PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) scored early in the third period to trim the deficit to one, but No. 11 Clarkson held on down the stretch as the Bears fell at home, 5-3, in Friday's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Clarkson improves to 7-3-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in the conference. Brown moves to 1-4-0, 1-4-0.
In addition to Giuttari, senior Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) and rookie Alec Mehr (Los Angeles, Calif.) also scored for the Bears. Mehr added an assist, while Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) and Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) had two assists apiece.
Jake Kielly made 32 stops for the Golden Knights to pick up the win. Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 23 saves for the Bears. Brown outshot Clarkson, 35-28.
Clarkson opened the game with two quick goals within a 23-second span. After Kevin Charyszan redirected a shot past Nieto for a power-play goal, Haralds Egle knocked home a shot at 3:46 to give the Golden Knights a two-goal advantage.
Brown responded at 9:07 when Corcoran scored an extra-attacker tally on the power play to cut the lead to one. After Nieto came off during a power play for the extra skater, Tony Stillwell sent the puck toward the net, where Corcoran was waiting for the redirection past Kielly. Beaudoin also earned an assist on the play.
Josh Dickinson added a power-play goal for the Golden Knights with just 11 seconds left in the period to give the visitors a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
Clarkson notched its third power-play goal of the game when Jere Astren scored at 8:49 for the three-goal lead. Nevertheless, Brown took it back at 14:09, when Mehr skated down the right side and unleashed a shot from the circle that soared past Kielly and into the net. Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) and Stillwell collected assists on the play.
Brown outshot Clarkson, 13-6, in the middle period.
Giuttari scored the team's second power-play goal of the night at 6:01, when he blasted a shot from in front of the blue line that rattled off the post and into the net, giving the defenseman his second goal of the season.
Brown was able to kill a Clarkson power play with six minutes remaining, but Josh Dickinson tacked on an empty-net goal to seal the win.
