PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman forward Star White scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute to lift Brown University women's soccer to a 1-0 win in overtime over the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon in its home finale at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
With the win on Senior Day, the Bears (11-4-0, 4-2-0 Ivy) jumped the Quakers (5-7-3, 3-2-0 Ivy) in the Ivy League standings, moving into third place with 12 points. With 11 wins, Brown now has its most victories in a season since going 13-4-0 in the year 2000.
"It was a great game today. I am really happy we got the result for the seniors," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "All five of them have meant a lot to the program. I'm glad we could send them off here with a home win. Star had a great finish there at the end."
White (Norfolk, Va.) scored a game-winning goal in overtime in Ivy League play for the second time this season after notching the decisive tally in the Bears' 1-0 (OT) win over Dartmouth to open Ivy League play. For the season, she now has five goals and 15 points.
Junior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and senior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) each tallied one assist. Waldman now has 20 points on the year on seven goals and six assists while Story has 15 points on five goals and five assists.
In the win (11-4-0), junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made four saves in her fifth shutout of the year and fourth clean sheet in Ivy League play. In her career, she now has 27 wins, 19 shutouts, and 205 saves.
Brown's back line of freshman center back Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), senior right back Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), and junior left back Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) contributed to Brown's sixth shutout as a team this fall.
On the game-deciding play, Schmidt sent a long throw-in from the left side into the penalty area. Waldman and Story each played the ball before White chipped a shot into the right side of the goal from 10 yards at the 93:55 mark.
Prior to the game, Brown honored the five members of its Class of 2018 – Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.), Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.), Rylee Shumway (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four years.
For the match, Brown led in shots (23-10), shots on goal (10-5), and corner kicks (8-7). Penn goalkeeper Kitty Qu made nine saves in the loss (4-5-3).
