PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Spencer Carroll scored a game-high three goals, but No. 15 Brown University men's water polo fell to No. 19 St. Francis Brooklyn, 9-7, in a NWPC game on Saturday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
In their first home game since Sept. 3 and first NWPC game since Oct. 7, the Bears (15-10, 2-4 NWPC) tied the game at 7-7 with 3:33 remaining before the visiting Terriers (12-9, 7-0 NWPC) scored the game's last two goals.
Alongside his hat trick, Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) added an assist and three ejections drawn. Senior Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) scored two goals with an assist while sophomore Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) totaled a goal, an assist, and two steals.
Senior Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) added a goal and an assist, and sophomore Jack Wilson (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) came up with a team-high three steals.
In the cage, freshman goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) made 11 saves.
The two teams traded goals over most of the first quarter as tallies from Carroll and Bush kept the game tied at 2-2. St. Francis netted the opening period's final goal to take a 3-2 edge into the second stanza. The Terriers notched the second quarter's only two goals to bring a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
Bush cut the margin to 5-3 early in the third quarter before St. Francis went back up 6-3. A goal from Kirchberg late in the frame trimmed the deficit to 6-4 going into the final period.
Goals from Carroll on either side of a Terrier tally brought Brown within 7-6 with 5:21 to play. Deirmenjian knotted the score at 7-7 with 3:33 to go, but the visitors scored with 2:27 and 1:33 on the clock to seal the win.
St. Francis took the regular season series between the two squads, 2-1. Brown beat St. Francis in overtime in Providence, 12-11, on Sept. 2, before the Terriers won in New York, 5-4, on Sept. 30.
A total of 17 goals have decided Brown's last 14 games with the Bears playing in three overtime contests during that span and compiling an 8-6 overall record.
Next, Brown hosts No. 12 Princeton (10:00 a.m.), and Iona (2:30 p.m.) in a pair of NWPC games on Sunday.
