Brown at a Glance
Under the direction of head coach Brendan Whittet, who is entering his ninth season behind the bench, the 2017-18 men's hockey team welcomes back 19 letterwinners from last year's team in addition to eight promising newcomers. Brown returns its top six scorers from last season, including 91 percent of its total goals, as the Bears are ranked fourth in the nation in both returning goal and point percentage.
Senior Sam Lafferty will headline the veteran group after a breakout junior season when he earned All-ECAC honors. Lafferty paced the Bears with 35 points in 31 games last season and also earned Second Team All-Ivy accolades. Fellow senior Charlie Corcoran led the team with 15 goals and Max Willman ranked third on the squad in both goals and points. Senior defenseman Josh McArdle, who also earned All-Ivy honors last winter, will serve as team captain this season. Senior Tyler Bird will join Lafferty as the assistant captains.
Brown will face another challenging schedule in 2017-18, including 15 home games at Meehan Auditorium, the most since the 2012-13 campaign. The Bears will play ten games against teams that finished last season ranked in the final USCHO.com top-20 poll and seven games against programs that reached the 2017 NCAA Tournament. In addition to a full ECAC slate, the Bears will play seven non-conference games, headlined by the annual Mayor's Cup matchup with crosstown rival Providence College.
All-Time in Season Openers
Since Brown's first season in 1897-98, the Bears are 37-52-4 in season-opening games. Brown fell to Holy Cross, 3-0, on the road last season to open the campaign.
Scouting Yale
Yale, one of six Ivy League teams, will also open the 2017-18 season this weekend. Yale went 13-15-5 overall and 7-11-4 in the ECAC last season, falling in two games to Harvard in the conference quarterfinals. Joe Snively led the Bulldogs with 39 points and 25 assists in 33 games as a sophomore. Sam Tucker returns after splitting time in goal last season. He ended the season with a 5-8-1 record to go along with a 3.05 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage. The Bulldogs clocked in at 19.9 percent on the power play, but graduated John Hayden, who scored 12 of the team's 29 power-play goals. Yale was right in the middle of the pack in scoring offense, ranked sixth in the ECAC with 3.00 goals per game.
