PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel posted her fifth shutout of the season as Brown University women's soccer played the University of Massachusetts to a 0-0 draw in double overtime on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (3-1-2) outshout the visiting Minutewomen (2-3-1), 5-0, between the two overtime sessions, but neither side could find the back of the net over the course of the 110-minute contest.
"We've only conceded one goal in six games now," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "I think that our team has really taken pride in not conceding goals and not giving up easy goals to other teams."
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made four saves in the draw (3-1-2), pushing her career shutout total to nine clean sheets. She has allowed just one goal over 580 minutes this season for a 0.16 goals-against average.
On the other end of the field, UMass goalie Cassidy Babin (2-3-1) turned aside three shots for her third clean sheet of the year.
Brown's defensive contributors to the shutout included the starting back four of juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomores Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) as well as senior back Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.) and the team's defensive midfielders – junior Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) and freshman Terri Wilken (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.).
The Bears' generated the better of the chances after regulation with senior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) putting her head on a corner kick in the 92nd minute. Sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) followed with a header shot of her own in the 95th minute. Brown tallied two shots inside of the final 5:15 with both attempts going wide.
"I think we saw some good things today – some good build up," McNeill said. "I think that we're one cross, one pass, one touch away from finishing the ball. That's going to come."
In the second half, a shot from UMass' Erin Doster from inside the box went just wide of the left post in the 73rd minute while a strike from Gould carried just over the crossbar in the 59th minute. A header shot from sophomore Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) required a diving save in the 48th minute.
Over the course of the first half, freshman Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) played multiple threatening balls into the box while the Minutewomen created the most danger for Brown inside of the opening period's final five minutes.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (5-4) while UMass led in shots on goal, 4-3.
Brown moved to 7-12-2 all-time vs. Massachusetts and 4-2-1 in the last seven meetings.
