NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Senior Ella Warshauer scored her second career goal, sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel notched her sixth shutout in seven matches this year, and Brown University women's soccer blanked Central Connecticut State University, 1-0, at CCSU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (4-1-2) went ahead of the Blue Devils (2-8-0) in the 74th minute as Warshauer (Santa Monica, Calif.) – making her first appearance since the 2014 season – found the back of the net.
After the Bears won away a CCSU goal kick via a header from sophomore Amanda Lane (Paradise Valey, Ariz.), Warshauer slotted a shot into the left side of the net from the edge of the box at the 73:54 mark for her first goal of the season.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) – who came into the match in the top-7 in the country in shutouts, goals-against average, and save percentage – made one save in the clean sheet, extending her career total to 10 shutouts. She has allowed just one goal in 670 minutes on the season for a 0.13 GAA.
Brown's defensive unit continued to stymie its opponents with the Bears' starting back four of senior Sydney Calas (Bethesda, Md.), juniors Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) and sophomore Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) contributing to another clean sheet.
In the first half, sophomore Kate Maher (Seattle, Wash.) created the best chance as she placed a header off the crossbar in the 45th minute off a cross from the left side. Etzel made one save in the first half, stopping a close-range shot in the 12th minute while also punching away a dangerous corner kick in the 4th minute.
For the match, the two teams tied with four shots and four corner kicks apiece. Brown led two to one in shots on goal.
Brown, ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, improved to 2-0-1 all-time vs. CCSU.
CCSU goalie Ashley Cavanaugh (0-2-0) stopped one shot in the loss.
