WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Former Brown rower Anders Weiss '15 (Barrington, R.I.) will represent the United States at the 2016 Olympic Games after winning the men's pair finals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials II Wednesday morning on Mercer Lake.
Weiss, along with former California rower Nareg Guregian, completed the four-day men's pair trial with a victory in the finals to qualify for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this August. The duo led the final contest from the start, and faced a series of challengers during the middle of the race, but ended with a thrilling sprint to cross in a time of 6:21.10 for a new course record.
Vesper Boat Club's Tom Peszek and Yohann Rigogne were the closest competition the entire time and finished runner-up in a time of 6:22.23. The pair of Mike Gennaro and Dariush Aghai claimed third at 6:29.55.
A four-year standout rower at Brown and a two-time All-Ivy selection, Weiss helped the Bears to a pair of runner-up finishes at the 2013 and 2014 Eastern Sprints. He also rowed in the sixth seat of the varsity boat that earned a silver medal at the 2014 IRA National Championship. The Rhode Island native went on to capture a silver medal in the men's eight at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Weiss is the second Brown men's crew alum to earn a trip to Rio, along with Luke McGee '01, the head heavyweight coach of the U.S. Men's National Team. McGee coached the U.S. men's eights to a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games with a first-place showing at the Final Olympic Qualification regatta in late May.
