
Softball Sweeps Cornell for First Time Since Year 2000, 8-0, 8-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball swept Cornell University in a doubleheader for the first time since the year 2000, taking game one, 8-0, in six innings, and winning game two, 8-4, in its home-opening series on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears (15-10, 4-2 Ivy) plated six runs between the fifth and sixth to run-rule the Big Red (4-18, 1-5 Ivy) in the opener before scoring three runs in the sixth in game two to gain distance from the visitors.
Sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) led the Bears at the plate between the two games, finishing 7-for-8 with six RBIs, a home run – her third of the year – two doubles, and five runs scored.
In the circle, sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) earned her first shutout of the season in game one while in game two, junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) picked up the win, and sophomore Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) gained her first career save.
Prior to the twin bill, the Bears honored the 1986 Brown softball team as part of the 30th anniversary of its Ivy League Championship.
Next, Brown hosts Princeton tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Brown 8, Cornell 0 (6 Innings)
Park went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, and a double, and Orona tallied her third career shutout as Brown topped Cornell, 8-0, in six innings in its 2016 home opener.
Senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run – her second of the season – and three runs. Freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) enjoyed a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs and a double, and junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Orona (7-5) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed no runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. She retired each of the first nine batters that she faced.
The Bears took a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first as Leung led off the inning with a solo homer to left center. After Park and Lotz each singled, Schoenewald hit an RBI single to right field.
Brown extended its advantage to 6-0 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) singled, junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) reached on a bunt single, and Leung was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Park then drove a two-run double to left field, Lotz notched a sacrifice fly, and Schoenewald hit an RBI single down the left field line.
The hosts ended the game with two runs in the last of the sixth. Hanna and Leung each singled to set the table before Park and Lotz each slotted an RBI single up the middle.
Cornell's Meg Marker took the loss (2-7), throwing 5.1 innings and giving up eight runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts.
Game 2: Brown 8, Cornell 4
Park recorded a 4-for-4 game with three RBIs, a home run, a double, and three runs, while also throwing a runner out at the plate in the top of the sixth, to lead Brown to an 8-4 win over Cornell in game two.
Leung went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, and Schoenewald registered a 2-for-4 game with an RBI and a run.
Chieffallo (5-1) tossed 5.2 innings, permitting three runs on nine hits with no walks and a strikeout. Nakashima came on in relief, hurling 1.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with no walks.
Brown moved ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the third with Leung and Park each reaching base on a bunt single. Schoenewald then hit an RBI single to center field, scoring one run before a second came home on an error. Andrews plated another run with a single to center. Cornell pulled within 3-1 in the top of the fourth on a leadoff homer from Leanne Iannucci down the left field line.
The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 5-1 lead. Park provided the power for the hosts in the frame, launching a two-run home run over the wall in right center. The Big Red cut its deficit to 5-2 in the top of the fifth on a leadoff homer from Kim Dolhon down the left field line.
Nakashima entered the game in relief in the top of the sixth after a sacrifice fly from Megan Murray made it 5-3. With runners on first and second and two outs, Park fielded a ball in right field in the next at bat and threw out a runner at the plate to maintain Brown's two-run edge.
The hosts plated three insurance runs in the sixth to pull ahead 8-3. Leung hit an RBI single to right center and Park sent an RBI single up the middle to start the scoring. Andrews finished the frame with a two-out, RBI double to left center.
The visitors made it 8-4 in the top of the seventh on a Jessica Bigbie solo homer down the right field line with two outs before Nakashima sealed the win.
The Big Red's Maddie Orcutt (2-8) suffered the loss, pitching 5.2 innings in the start and surrendering eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
