NEW YORK – Freshman Annie Scarangella hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to catalyze Brown University softball to a 7-6 win over Columbia University in game two after falling, 4-1, in game one in a doubleheader at Columbia Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 6-2 entering the seventh inning in the nightcap, the Bears (13-10, 2-2 Ivy) rallied for five runs in the frame to push past the Lions (7-19, 2-2 Ivy) after the hosts took the opener behind three runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
In game two, Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) drove the ball out of the park down the left field line with two outs in the top of the seventh to lift Brown ahead of Columbia on her first career home run.
A dramatic home run propelled the Bears to victory for the second straight day as a three-run blast from junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) in the top of the eighth pushed Brown to a 5-1 win over Penn in game one yesterday.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 12:30 p.m. to kick off its home-opening weekend. The Bears then host Princeton on Sunday, April 10 for a twin bill starting at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Columbia 4, Brown 1
Brown tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, but Columbia scored once in the bottom of the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 win in game one.
Junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) paced the Bears' lineup with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored. Classmate Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) drove in Schoenewald with a double in the fourth.
In the circle, sophomore starter Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts in the setback (6-5). Junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) did not give up a hit and fanned two batters in an inning of relief.
Columbia pitcher Tonia Wu took the win (5-5), tossing a complete-game 7.0 innings and permitting one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Jordan Townsend led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double, and a triple. Madison Gott went 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Taylor Troutt tallied two RBIs.
After the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off a double from Townsend, Brown knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Schoenewald started the frame with a single to center field before junior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. Andrews then drove a double down the left field line to plate Schoenewald.
The Lions gained a 2-1 edge in the home half of the fourth as Townsend sent an RBI triple to right center with two outs. Columbia moved ahead 4-1 after Troutt sent a two-run single up the middle in the last of the fifth.
Game 2: Brown 7, Columbia 6
Scarangella put the Bears up with her grand slam in the top of the seventh, and Chieffallo shut the door in the bottom of the inning as Brown came away with a 7-6 win over Columbia in game two.
Trailing 6-2 entering the final inning, sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.), freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas), and Schoenewald each singled to load the bases with no outs. Andrews then plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right field before the Lions recorded the second out.
Freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) worked a walk to load the bases again, and Scarangella pulled Brown out of its deficit with her four-run blast over the wall in left field. Chieffallo retired the side in order in the bottom of the stanza to close the game.
Scarangella finished the game with five RBIs while Lotz went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, run scored, and a walk. Park enjoyed a 2-for-4 effort with two runs.
In the win in relief, Chieffallo (4-1) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Junior starter Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on nine hits with a strikeout.
Columbia took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out before Troutt hit a two-run single, and Wu followed with an RBI double.
The Bears pulled within 3-1 in the top of the fourth as Andrews singled and moved to third on a sacrifice from freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) and a single from Venegas. Scarangella then brought Andrews home with a sacrifice fly. The Lions extended their lead to 5-1 in the fourth behind an RBI single from Krystin Wong and a safety squeeze bunt from Reilly Metzger.
An RBI double to left center from Lotz scored Park in the top of the fifth with two outs to trim the visitors' deficit to 5-2. Townsend hit a lead-off home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-2 before Brown executed its seventh-inning rally.
Columbia reliever Kayla Maloney (1-5) absorbed the loss, conceding three runs on two hits in an inning of work. Starter Tessa Kroll surrendered four runs, all earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
