PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball stayed within striking distance of Ivy League North Division leader Dartmouth College in both games, but the Big Green remained unbeaten in league play with wins of 2-1 and 4-2 in a doubleheader at Brown Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears (16-16, 5-7 Ivy) remained within four runs of the Big Green (24-10, 12-0 Ivy) throughout the twin bill and rallied for runs late in each game before the two-time defending Ivy champs and three-time defending North Division winners held on for victories in each instance.

Between the two games, sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) went 3-for-8 with a double, RBI, and stolen base while junior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished 3-for-6 with an RBI.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) allowed just one earned run in a complete game.

Next, Brown plays a single game at Providence College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. prior to partaking in four games at Harvard University from Saturday, Apr. 23 to Sunday, Apr. 24.

Game 1: Dartmouth 2, Brown 1

Freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) and Syrop each recorded two hits, and Brown rallied for a run in the bottom of the fifth before Dartmouth managed a 2-1 win in game one.

For the Bears, Venegas hit her first career double, Park laced an RBI double, and freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) scored a run.

In the circle, Orona (8-7) tossed 7.0 innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts in her 11^th complete game of the year.

Dartmouth's Morgan McCalmon (14-3) earned the win, pitching a complete-game 7.0 innings and permitting one run on nine hits with two strikeouts. Morgan Martinelli led the Big Green at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort with a double, RBI, and run.

The Big Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Martinelli drove an RBI double to right center. The visitors pushed their edge to 2-0 in the top of the third when Katie McEachern hit an RBI double to left field.

Brown cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth as Scarangella led off the frame with a single. Junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) advanced her with a sacrifice bunt, and Park brought her home with a double to right center.

The Bears loaded the bases with one out in the last of the sixth, but Dartmouth was able to escape the jam without conceding a run.

Game 2: Dartmouth 4, Brown 2

Park went 2-for-4, and junior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) threw three innings of scoreless relief, but Dartmouth gained a 4-2 win over Brown in game two.

Syrop and freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) each drove in a run for the Bears.

Chieffallo struck out one batter and permitted three hits over her 3.0 scoreless innings. Junior starter Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) hurled 4.0 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in the loss (3-8).

The Big Green's Breanna Ethridge (9-3) garnered the win, surrendering one run on seven hits with two strikeouts. Lauren Stone registered her second save of the year, tossing 2.0 innings in relief and giving up one run on one hit.

Dartmouth scored first with an RBI single to left field from Brianna Lohmann in the top of the second. In the top of the fourth, Taylor Ward plated a run with a ground out, and two runs later scored on an error, putting the visitors up 4-0.

The Bears responded with a run in the last of the fourth as junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) led off the inning with a single to left. Classmate Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) then hit a double to left center, and Syrop followed with an RBI single down the left field line.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) set the tone with a lead-off double down the left field line. Park advanced Leung with a groundout, and Lotz brought her home with another groundout before Dartmouth ended the threat.
