PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) went the distance to lead the Brown baseball team past Dartmouth in the first game, 4-2, but the Bears dropped the second game, 4-3, in Saturday's series-opening doubleheader at Murray Stadium.
Brown moved to 10-17 overall and 4-6 in the Ivy League, while the Big Green moved to 10-19, 4-4.
Game 1 (Brown 4, Dartmouth 2)
Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.), Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) and Brian Ginsberg (Calabasas, Calif.) led the offense in the first game with two hits apiece, while Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) drove in two runs.
Taugner earned his league-best fifth win of the season as he allowed two earned runs in seven innings with four strikeouts. Duncan Robinson took the loss on the other side as he allowed four runs, two earned, in six innings of work.
Brown scored first with a pair of runs in the third inning, as Guthrie drove in Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) on a single to short, before Huntley hit an RBI double to left field.
The Bears tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Shulman smacked a two-run double to center field, completing the three-hit frame.
Dartmouth broke through with two runs in the sixth, but Taugner limited the Big Green to one hit in the seventh to preserve the win.
Game 2 (Dartmouth 4, Brown 3)
Huntley added two more doubles in the second game to stretch his hit streak to 14 games, while Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the plate and Sam Grigo (Westbrook Conn.) had two hits.
Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) gave up four earned runs over 5.1 innings with six strikeouts in the loss. Michael Danielak picked up the win in relief and Patrick Peterson earned the four-out save.
Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) gave the Bears the early lead on a sacrifice fly in the second, but the Big Green responded in the top of the third to even the score.
After Brown regained the lead in the fifth on Huntley's RBI double, the visitors scored three times in the top of the six, using three hits to move out in front, 4-2.
The Bears chipped away with one run in the seventh on Grigo's RBI single, and then made it interesting in the ninth on Shulman's two-out double, but Peterson picked up the timely strikeout to seal the win.
