
Softball Concludes Play at Spartan Classic, Falls to UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Brown University softball took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first before UNC Greensboro earned a 10-1 decision in six innings in the Bears' final game at the Spartan Classic on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Bears (7-3) split two games with UNCG over the weekend after beating the host Spartans (9-9), 4-2, yesterday evening. Brown finished with a 3-2 record at the tournament after picking up a pair of wins over North Carolina Central University.
With its 7-3 record, Brown is off to its best start through 10 games since 2010 and stands as just the second Brown team since 1992 to win seven or more games in its first 10 contests. The Bears sit at 7-3 or better through 10 games for the sixth time since 1980.
UNCG's Alicia Bazonski earned the win (4-2), tossing 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Lindsay Thomas led the Spartans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, RBI, and three runs scored. Danielle Vega went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, and Rachael McClaskey scored three runs.
Sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) led the Bears at the dish with a 2-for-3 effort including an RBI double. Junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) also went 2-for-3, and senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior pitcher Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) took the loss (2-2) throwing 1.1 innings and giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits in the start. Sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, fanning five batters and permitting five runs, three earned, on four hits.
The Bears gained their 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Leung led the frame off with a single up the middle, and junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Park then drove home Leung with a double down the left field line.
UNCG pulled ahead 2-1 in the last half of the first as Thomas started the stanza with a solo home run to right center. Sidney Grkman hit a two-out single later in the inning to bring home McClaskey.
The Spartans extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second as McClaskey hit an RBI single through the right side, Thomas doubled home a run, and Vega brought home another on a sacrifice bunt.
The hosts pushed across two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-1 lead before finishing the game with three runs in the home half of the sixth. In the sixth, Vega sent an RBI double to right field, and Tory Wright closed the game with a two-run double to left.
Next, Brown plays five games at the College of Charleston Invitational from Mar. 18-20. The Bears play Connecticut (11:00 a.m.) and Eastern Michigan (3:30 p.m.) on Mar. 18, Central Connecticut (7:00 p.m.) on Mar. 19, and Miami (Ohio) (11:00 a.m.) and the College of Charleston (3:30 p.m.) on Mar. 20.
