
Softball Falls to Connecticut, Eastern Michigan on Day One in Charleston

Mt. PLEASANT, S.C. – Brown University fell to the University of Connecticut, 7-0, and to Eastern Michigan University, 4-1, in its first day of competition at the College of Charleston Invitational on Friday at Patriots Point.
The Bears (7-5) dropped their first game of the day to the Huskies (8-17) before pushing the Eagles (8-11) in an eventual setback.
Against the Eagles, senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) reached base safely three times while junior pitcher Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) faced four or fewer batters in each inning after the first frame.
Next, Brown continues play at the College of Charleston Invitational tomorrow with a game against Central Connecticut State at 7 p.m. The Bears will conclude play at the tournament on Sunday with contests against Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m. and the host Cougars at 3:30 p.m.
Game 1: Brown 7, Connecticut 0
Brown dropped a 7-0 decision to Connecticut in its first game of the day and the tournament at the College of Charleston Invitational.
UConn pitcher Kayla Doty (1-1) pitched a complete-game 7.0 innings, allowing two hits and no runs with three strikeouts.
Jacklyn Dubois and Ally Hernandez each went 2-for-3 for the Huskies with Dubois notching two RBIs. Dominique Pinto hit a pinch-hit, two-run double.
Brown sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) took the loss (3-2), throwing 3.2 innings and giving up five runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Junior Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) pitched 2.1 innings in relief, fanning two batters while permitting two runs on three hits.
Sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) and freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) each posted one hit for the Bears.
Orona struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning, but the Huskies scratched across two runs in the frame with three walks and two hit batters.
The Bears threatened in the top of the third, putting runners on first and second with one out and runners on first and third with two down. Scarangella set the table with a single up the middle, and freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) reached base in the next at bat. Leung then reached on a fielder's choice before the Huskies ended the danger.
Connecticut pushed its lead to 3-0 in the last of the third as Dubois singled, and Alyson Ambler came home on a throwing error on the play.
The Huskies extended their advantage to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs in the inning. Pinto hit a two-run double to left field to start the inning's scoring before Dubois drove home a run with a double, and Hernandez brought in a run with a single to left field.
Game 2: Eastern Michigan 4, Brown 1
Brown blanked Eastern Michigan after the first inning, but the Eagles held on to beat the Bears, 4-1, in Brown's second game of the day.
Chieffallo tossed a complete-game 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in the loss (2-1). She faced four or fewer batters in each of the second through sixth innings.
At the plate, Leung reached base safely with a hit and two walks, Park went 1-for-3 with a run scored, and junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) notched an RBI.
EMU starter Nicolle Miranda pitched 6.1 innings in the win (4-7), giving up one run on five hits. Trisha Trujillo registered the game's last two outs in the circle. Sam Saporito and Michelle Kriegshauser each tallied two hits while Haley Hostetler posted two RBIs with a double.
Brown put EMU under pressure in the top of the first as Leung led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third with one out before the Eagles recorded two consecutive outs.
Eastern Michigan plated four runs in the bottom of the first as Abi Clark hit an RBI single to right field, Kriegshauser drove an RBI single to left center, and Hostetler scored two runs with a double down the left field line.
The Bears cut their deficit to 4-1 in the top of the third as Schoenewald and Park each singled to help load the bases. Andrews then brought home a run with a ground out.
Bruno attempted a rally in the top of the seventh as sophomore Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) and Leung each walked with one out before EMU made its way out of the jam with a double play.
