
Softball Sweeps Past NCCU, UNCG on Day Two of Spartan Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Brown University softball defeated North Carolina Central University, 5-2, and edged host UNC Greensboro, 4-2, to sweep its competition on the second day of the Spartan Classic at UNCG Softball Stadium on Saturday.
The Bears (7-2) took down the Eagles (0-14) for the second straight day prior to topping the host Spartans (8-9) to improve to 3-1 through four games at the tournament.
Junior pitcher Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) pitched a complete-game 7.0 innings and struck out four while not allowing an earned run against NCCU, and sophomore Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) went 7.0 innings and gave up just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts vs. UNCG.
Senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) paced the Bears at the plate, going 5-for-8 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a double between the two games. Junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) hit her second home run of the year vs. UNCG.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Spartan Classic tomorrow with another tilt against UNCG (12:30 p.m.).
Game 1: Brown 5, North Carolina Central University 2
Chieffallo did not allow an earned run in a complete game, and Leung went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Brown to a 5-2 win over North Carolina Central University on Saturday afternoon in its first game of the day and third overall at the Spartan Classic.
Chieffallo allowed two runs, none earned, on three hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings in the win (2-2). She did not give up an extra-base hit, permitted just one ball to leave the infield safely, and did not allow a base runner in the sixth or seventh innings.
Supporting Leung, sophomore Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) and freshmen Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) and Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) each tallied one RBI.
After NCCU scratched across an unearned run in the top of the first, Brown responded with a run in the last half of the inning. Leung led the frame off with a single through the right side, made her way to third on a pair of ground balls, and scored on a passed ball.
Brown took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) started the rally with a double before Springfield singled to center, and junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) reached on a bunt. Leung and Venegas then hit an RBI single apiece, and Lotz plated another run with a groundout.
The Eagles pulled within 4-2 in the top of the fifth with another unearned run, but the Bears grabbed an insurance run in the home half of the stanza. Andrews hit a double down the right field line with two outs to bring home Schoenewald who singled earlier in the inning.
Jennifer Allison (0-5) took the loss for NCCU, conceding five runs, four earned, on nine hits with one strikeout in a complete-game 6.0 innings. Markell Wylie led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
Game 2: Brown 4, UNCG 2
Orona tossed a complete game, Leung went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Schoenewald drove a home run to left center as Brown beat UNCG, 4-2, to conclude its second day at the Spartan Classic on Saturday evening.
Schonewald finished 2-for-4 while Lotz notched two RBIs. Orona fanned five batters over 7.0 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Brown gained a 2-0 lead after the top of the first behind RBI singles from Lotz and Andrews. After Leung led off with a single, Hanna moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, and Lotz drove her home. Schoenewald then singled, and Andrews plated her with a single down the right field line.
The Bears extended their lead to 3-0 in the away half of the second. Venegas set the table with an infield single before Leung doubled, and Hanna reached on a bunt single. Lotz then hit a ground ball which brought home Venegas.
Leading off the top of the fifth, Schoenewald drove a solo shot over the wall in left center to stake the visitors to a 4-0 advantage.
UNCG attempted a rally in the bottom of the sixth as Lacey Leary led off with a walk, and Danielle Vega plated her on a one-out single. Sidney Grkman drove home another on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 before Orona charted a strikeout to end the threat.
Orona did not allow a ball to leave the infield in the last of the seventh to seal the win.
For UNCG, Stephanie Bryden (5-4) took the loss, hurling 4.0 innings and giving up four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Lacey Leary pitched 3.0 innings in relief, permitting one hit with two 'K's.
