CARY, N.C. – The Brown baseball team raced out to an early lead, but Notre Dame scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the walk-off win over the Bears, 7-6, on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Brown moved to 1-1 overall after winning the opening game of the USA Baseball-Irish Classic against Bucknell on Friday. Notre Dame improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 at the tournament.
Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) paced the Brown offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.), Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.), Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) and Brian Ginsberg (Calabasas, Calif.) drove in one run apiece.
Sophomore Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) put together a solid start, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) provided 2.1 innings of one-run work in relief, before Henry was handed the loss on four runs in the ninth.
Jack Connolly tossed four innings of hitless ball out of the bullpen to earn the win for the Irish.
Brown jumped on board in the top of the third, scoring four runs on five hits, including four straight hits to open the inning. Jake Rosander (Fullerton, Calif.) led off with a single before Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) doubled to left to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Henry, who singled through the left side to drive in both runs. Levine followed with an RBI double to right center and scored two batters later on a two-out single by Huntley to complete the four-run frame.
The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of two-out hits. Guthrie smacked an RBI single to center to drive in Henry, who reached on a leadoff single. Ginsberg then sent home Guthrie with a single down the right field line.
Notre Dame got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when Kyle Fiala and Zak Kutsulis posted consecutive RBI singles with two outs to cut the lead to four, 6-2.
After adding another run in the eighth, the Irish scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Henry struck out two batters, but Kutsulis hit a walk-off three-run double with two outs to seal the win.
