LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Brown baseball team racked up 25 combined hits as the Bears swept past Siena, 10-2 and 7-5, in a pair of seven-inning games on Wednesday at Siena Field.
Brown has won five of its last seven games to improve to 6-10 overall, while the Saints move to 5-17. Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.) had one home run in each game, while Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) and Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) had four hits apiece.
Game 1 (Brown 10, Siena 2)
Huntley and Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) paced Brown's 16-hit attack with three hits each, while Huntley also had two doubles and two RBIs. Guthrie had one home run and drove in three runs. Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.), Shulman and Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) posted two hits apiece.
Guthrie allowed two runs in two innings as the starter, before JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) tossed five scoreless frames to earn the win in relief. Justin Scala took the loss for the Saints.
Brown went right to work in the top of the first when Guthrie launched a two-run shot over the left field fence for his first homer of the season. Siena answered back in the bottom half with a two-run homer from Joe Drpich to even the score.
The Bears scattered six hits over the next four innings, including a pair of singles in the third and fifth, but the Saints kept the Bears off the board.
Sliepka came in to pitch in the third and provided nine straight outs for the Bears. Sliepka was tested in the sixth when Siena posted back-to-back two-out singles, the home team's first hit since the first inning, but he got out of the inning on a groundout.
Brown's offense came alive with eight runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh. After Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska), Henry and Levine hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases, Shulman drove in the go-ahead run on a single through the left side. The Bears added two more runs on an error and a walk, chasing Scala for Tim Zehnbauer, before Ginsberg hit an RBI single through the left side. Huntley then drove in a pair on his second double of the game before Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) added a two-run single to complete the scoring.
Sliepka closed out the game with a scoreless seventh to seal the win.
Game 2 (Brown 7, Siena 5)
Shulman went 2-for-3 in the second game to pace the offense, while Guthrie and Grigo knocked home two runs apiece. Grant Greeno (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) allowed just one unearned run in three innings to earn the win. Henry came in to close the seventh for his first save of the season.
The two teams each scored one run in the second inning as both crossed the plate on an error and then induced a double play with the bases loaded.
Brown came right back in the top of the third as Grigo drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle. The Bears added two more runs in the fourth when Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) singled, worked his way around the bases and then scored on Henry's single to short. Shulman followed with an RBI single to right field for the four-run lead, 5-1.
Siena took one run back in the bottom of the fourth on Jordan Bishop's RBI double to left field.
Guthrie smacked a two-run shot to left field in the sixth inning, his second homer of the series, but the home side responded with three runs in the bottom half to trim the lead to two, 7-5, for the eventual win.
Brown will open Ivy League play this weekend when the Bears visit Penn (4/3) and Columbia (4/4) for a pair of doubleheaders.
