WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Austin French (Orange, Conn.) tossed a complete game shutout to lift the Brown baseball team past Holy Cross in the opener, 3-0, before the Bears dropped the second game, 12-11, in Sunday's doubleheader at Fitton Field.
Brown (4-10) and Holy Cross (8-15) also split the doubleheader on Saturday at Murray Stadium.
Game 1 (Brown 3, Holy Cross 0)
French went the distance for Brown in the opener, limiting the Crusaders to just three hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Justin Finan took the loss on the other side as he gave up three runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Brown had four players post one hit apiece, while Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) and Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) each had one double.
After three scoreless innings, Brown broke through with two runs in the fourth, when Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) drove in Huntley on a single to center field and then scored on a wild pitch. The Bears tacked on another run in the fifth as Shulman doubled to center and then crossed the plate on another wild pitch for the three-run lead.
French had six strikeouts over the course of the final three innings to complete the shutout.
Game 2 (Holy Cross 12, Brown 11)
The Crusaders came out on top in the second game, capping the wild back-and-forth affair with a walk-off homer in the ninth after Brown took the lead in the top of the frame.
Huntley went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI, while Brian Ginsberg (Calabasas, Calif.) had two hits, five RBIs, two runs and one home run. Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) and Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) added two hits apiece in the team's 11-hit effort.
Matt Beyer (Los Angeles, Calif.) was handed the loss in relief after Bobby Leyman (North Hampton, N.H.) allowed three runs as the starter. Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) allowed two earned runs in 4.2 innings out of the bullpen. Sean Gustin earned the victory for the Crusaders.
After Holy Cross opened with two runs in the first, Brown answered with three in the top of the second, as Henry and Levine provided back-to-back RBI singles with two outs. The Crusaders scored one more in the bottom half of the frame to cut the lead to 3-2.
Brown continued to score in the top of the third inning when Ginsberg blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence for the three-run lead, but the home side cut the lead back to one with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Holy Cross held the Brown offense in check for five straight innings and scored four runs in the sixth for a 9-6 lead.
Facing a three-run deficit in the top of the ninth, the Bears rallied for five runs on four hits in the final frame. Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.) opened it up with a two-run double down the left field line. Huntley then drove home Shulman on a sacrifice fly before Ginsberg smacked a two-run double to left center for the two-run lead.
Nevertheless, Anthony Critelli hit a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to salvage the series split for the home squad.
Brown will head to Siena for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday before opening Ivy League play next weekend at Penn (4/2) and Columbia (4/3).
