PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team topped Holy Cross, 2-1, in the first game before falling to the Crusaders in the second game, 9-0, in the team's home opener Saturday at Murray Stadium.

Brown moves to 3-9 overall, while the Crusaders stand at 7-14 on the season.

Junior Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) tossed a complete game victory in the first game, limiting Holy Cross to just three hits over seven innings of work. He allowed just one run and one walk to go along with three strikeouts.

Game 1 (Brown 2, Holy Cross 1)
Brendan King threw opposite of Taugner in the opener, going six innings for the Crusaders with two runs allowed on two hits.

Bobby Indeglia drove in the only run for Holy Cross on a two-out single in the top of the second inning.

Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) provided the timely offense for the Bears as he hit a two-run, two out double in the bottom of the fourth to push the Bears out in front, 2-1. Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) had the other hit for the Bears with one run scored.

Taugner closed out the game strong with three straight hitless innings, including a pair of strikeouts in the final frame to seal the victory. He improves to 2-1 on the season with a league-best 1.55 earned run average.

Game 2 (Holy Cross 9, Brown 0)
The Crusaders outhit the Bears by a 14-3 margin in the second game to pick up the split. Phil Reese earned the victory as he allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) was handed the loss, but limited the Crusaders to just two runs over seven innings to go along with four strikeouts.

Holy Cross carried a slim two-run lead into the seventh frame, but then scored seven runs over the final two stanzas. Bill Schlich and Thomas Russo paced the visitors with three hits apiece.

The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow in Worcester. The first game is set to start at 1:05 PM.
