Mt. PLEASANT, S.C. – Freshman Annie Scarangella hit a walk-off, RBI double to left center in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Brown University softball a 2-1 win over Central Connecticut State University at the College of Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point on Saturday.
In their third game and second day at the tournament, the Bears (8-5) beat the Blue Devils (6-11) in extra innings with sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitching a complete game and allowing just one ball to leave the infield safely in the contest.
In the last of the eighth, freshman Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) started on second base as part of tie-breaking procedures, and junior Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) moved her to third base with a bunt single. Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) proceeded to drive her double to left center to win the game.
Orona (4-2) threw 8.0 innings, permitting just the one run on five hits with six strikeouts, no walks, and no extra-base hits.
Scarangella finished 2-for-3 in the game with a double and an RBI, and Hanna went 2-for-4. Junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) reached base safely four times with a double and three walks alongside a run scored.
CCSU pitcher Emily Sargent (4-4) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and six walks.
Orona shut down Central Connecticut in the top of the eighth despite a runner starting the inning on second base. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third, Orona induced a ground out and pop out.
The Blue Devils tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh as Eileen Purcell led off the inning with a single up the middle before a sacrifice bunt and ground out moved her to third. Brittany Camara brought her home with an infield single.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second as Schoenewald opened the frame with a double to left center. After freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) walked and junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) singled through the left side, Venegas plated Schoenewald with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Next, Brown concludes play at the College of Charleston Invitational tomorrow with games against Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m. and the host Cougars at 1:30 p.m.
