
Softball Tops Canisius, 5-1, Falls to Winthrop, 8-3, on Opening Day

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brown University softball defeated Canisius College, 5-1, before falling to Winthrop University, 8-3, on Opening Day at the Winthrop Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Terry Softball Complex.
The Bears (1-1) topped the Golden Griffins (1-8) in their season opener prior to dropping a decision to the host Eagles (4-7) in their second game of the day.
In the opener vs. Canisius, sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) allowed just one run on two hits with three strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Between the two games, junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs, two doubles, and a home run.
Next, Brown continues competition at the Winthrop Invitational tomorrow with games against Appalachian State (1:00 p.m.) and Wagner (5:00 p.m.).
Game 1 – Brown 5, Canisius 1
Orona did not give up a run until the top of the seventh, Schoenewald hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth, and Brown beat Canisius, 5-1, in its season opener on Friday afternoon at Winthrop's Field C.
Schoenewald, sophomore Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.), and freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) each drove in a run for the Bears. Schoenewald registered a double and her homer, going 2-for-2, and Park hit a double.
Orona did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth and retired the side in order in the first, third, and fourth innings.
Seitz put Brown on the board in the bottom of the first as she singled up the middle to score Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.). The Bears plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 3-0.
In the last of the fourth, Schoenewald hit a solo shot to left field to push Brown ahead 4-0, and in the bottom of the fifth Park doubled to center field to bring home Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) giving the Bears a 5-0 edge.
Canisius scored a run on a ground ball in the top of the seventh before Orona closed the game.
Game 2 – Winthrop 8, Brown 3
Brown took a 2-0 lead after the top of the third, but Winthrop responded with the game's next eight runs to take an 8-3 decision in the Bears' second game at the Winthrop Invitational on Friday afternoon at Terry Field.
Senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario), Schoenewald, and Park each drove in a run for the Bears. Schoenewald and Park scored one run apiece, and Schoenewald tallied a double.
Junior pitcher Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) threw a complete-game 6.0 innings, striking out four and allowing three earned runs, eight total, on 12 hits.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) led off the inning with a walk, and Park brought her home later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right center.
Brown doubled its edge to 2-0 in the top of the third with Schoenewald opening the frame with a double to left center. Leung then drove her in with a two-out, RBI single up the middle.
Winthrop tied the game at 2-2 in the last of the third as the Eagles scratched their first run across on a passed ball and added another after a dropped third strike.
The Eagles gained a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the fourth, plating three unearned runs with two outs in the inning. Zharne Glover hit a two-run double to left center, and Morgan Lowers followed with an RBI single through the right side.
The hosts tacked on three runs, all with two outs, in the home half of the sixth. Paige Haley brought in one with a single, and Megan Willingham drove in a pair with a single to center field.
The visitors rallied with a run in the top of the seventh as Park led off the stanza with a single through the right side and came home on an RBI from Schoenewald.
