HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) scored early in the third period, but the Brown men' hockey team could not climb back from a three-goal deficit as the Bears fell at top-ranked Quinnipiac, 4-1, in Friday's ECAC contest at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Brown moved to 5-17-6, 3-13-5 in conference play, while Quinnipiac improved to 24-2-7, 15-1-5 to secure the ECAC regular season title.
Junior Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 34 saves in net for the Bears, while Michael Garteig had 17 stops for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac went right to work to open the game, taking advantage of an early Brown penalty for a power play 17 seconds into the game, before Travis St. Denis scored at 1:23 for the one-goal lead.
Tim Clifton gave the Bobcats a two-goal lead at 6:59 in the second period. Scott Davidson slid a pass out of the reach of Ernst to the slot, where Clifton finished the one-timer to make it 2-0.
From there, Kevin McKernan scored 1:37 into the third period on a shot from in front of the crease to give the home side the three-goal lead.
Brown answered right back, however, when Middleton responded 53 seconds later to trim the deficit back to two, 3-1. Aleksi Rossi (Kuipio, Finland) rifled a shot that was denied by a diving Garteig, but the rebound went right to the slot, where Middleton hit the open net for his second of the season.
The Bobcats tacked on a fourth and final goal later in the period when Luke Shiplo scored at 16:03 to secure the victory.
The Bears will visit Princeton tomorrow for the regular season finale at 7 p.m.
