PRINCETON, N.J. – Davey Middleton (Novi, Mich.) and Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) both scored, and Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made a career-high 43 saves, as the Brown men's hockey team tied Princeton, 2-2, Saturday night in the regular season finale at Hobey Baker Rink.
Brown moves to 5-17-7 overall and 3-13-6 in the conference, while Princeton now stands at 5-21-3, 3-16-3 ECAC. Brown, the No. 11 seed, will visit No. 6 RPI in the first round of the ECAC Tournament in a best-of-three series starting on Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
Ernst made 19 saves in the third period and six in overtime en route to a 43-save effort, while Colton Phinney stopped 33 shots on the other end.
Princeton held a slight edge in shots, 10-9, in the opening period, but the Brown special teams unit stepped up with a pair of penalty kills in the frame.
Princeton opened the second period with 1:41 left on a power play after a Brown penalty late in the first, but Middleton scored a short-handed goal 50 seconds into the period. He gained possession in the defensive end and carried the puck up the ice with numbers before taking it himself for his second goal in as many nights.
The Tigers responded at 4:11 when Ryan Berlin scooped up the loose puck in the neutral zone and used an odd-man rush to setup Stuart Pomeroy for the equalizer.
A pair of Princeton penalties later in the period gave Brown a 5-on-3 power play and Bird broke through at 14:06 for his fifth of the season. Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) blasted a shot that was saved, but Bird flipped the rebound over Phinney and into the back of the net for the lead.
Brown outshot Princeton by a 19-10 margin in the second period.
Princeton returned the favor in the third period, outshooting Brown 19-7, and the Bears held off several attacks throughout the frame. However, Max Veronneau scored an extra-attacker goal with seven seconds remaining to force overtime.
Ernst stood tall in the extra period as he turned away six shots to hold off the Tigers, including a glove save to deny Ryan Kuffner with 22 seconds left, as the Bears held on for the draw.
Brown was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Princeton was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Brown will open a best-of-three series at Rensselaer on Friday.
