PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) scored in the 97th minute to lift the Brown men's soccer team over crosstown rival Providence College, 2-1, in overtime Friday evening at Ray Treacy Track.
Brown improves to 2-0 on the season, while Providence suffered its first loss of the season to move to 3-1-1 overall. The Friars won the Big East title last season and advanced to the 2014 NCAA College Cup semifinal.
Hagstrom broke a 1-1 tie at 96:50 for his first career collegiate goal. Senior Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) corralled a throw-in about 10 yards out and quickly tapped the ball over to Hagstrom, who rifled a shot past Friar keeper Ben Segulic for the victory.
"It was an awesome college soccer game," said head coach Pat Laughlin. "Our guys stood up to an incredible Providence College soccer team, and to have to go up against them away and get the win, it's deserved. We created a lot of chances, especially in the second half."
"It was a battle for nearly 100 minutes," said senior co-captain Tim Whalen. "It was nice to get an early goal which came off of hard work and a little luck in the box, and even when they came back and scored on us, we kept our heads down, took them to overtime and it paid off in the end."
Sophomore Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made three stops to earn the win, while Segulic had a pair of saves in the loss. Providence held an 11-8 edge in shots.
Brown struck first 1:56 into the second half, as Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) raced down the left side and sent a pass to Louis Zingas (Warren, Mich.) in front, but the pass deflected off a PC defender and went into the back of the net for the own goal.
Providence answered right back in the 56th minute when Mac Steeves fielded a pass, muscled his way around a pair of defenders and blasted a shot into the center of the net to even the score, 1-1.
The Friars continued to attack with another solid bid less than two minutes later, but Hanson stretched out to deny Tiago Mendonca's shot that was curving to the left corner of the net.
Brown maintained momentum over the next 10 minutes due to the work of Will Cross, who peppered a few shots on target to keep play in PC territory and produce a few corners. After Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) had a header hit the right post, the Brown defense was able to block a pair of shots from Steeves down the stretch to force overtime and pave the way for Hagstrom's game-winner.
Julian Gressel paced the Friars with four shots in the opening half, including an early chance eight minutes in, when his shot rang off the right post and the rebound sailed high over the crossbar. PC outshot the Bears by a 7-2 margin in the first stanza.
Brown will host Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept. 13 for the home opener at Stevenson Field. Tickets for all Brown men's soccer games can be purchased online, by calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or by walking up to the box office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
