PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) converted a penalty kick for the lone goal of the contest as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Holy Cross, 1-0, in Sunday afternoon's home opener at Stevenson Field.
Brown improved to 3-0-0 overall and picked up its second shutout of the season. Holy Cross dropped to 1-2-2 overall.
Gorab notched his first tally of the season with a penalty kick at 37:05. After a Holy Cross defender was whistled for a handball in the box, Gorab hit the top left corner of the net to give the home side the one-goal advantage.
Rookie keeper Teo Norhagen (Stockholm, Sweden) turned away four shots to earn the shutout in his first career start. Kevin Wright recorded seven saves on the other end for the Crusaders.
Norhagen was tested early, but came up with impressive back-to-back saves in the fifth minute, stopping Joey DeVivo and Matt Villano on consecutive shots. Brown came back with a pair on chances in the 21st minute by means of Jason Pesek (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.), only to be denied by Wright, highlighted by a diving stop on the first attempt.
The Brown defense kept the Crusaders at bay in the second half, limiting the visitors to just two shots on target. Holy Cross gave the Bears a scare in the 73rd minute when Yugo Callahan blasted a shot off the right post, but after Norhagen stopped another Villano attempt two minutes later, the home team held on down the stretch for the victory.
Holy Cross outshot the Bears, 15-10, while Brown held the edge in corner kicks, 6-2.
Brown hits the road for the pair of games next weekend, visiting Georgia State on Friday and Clemson on Sunday.
