
Jones, Whalen Lead Fencing at NCAA Northeast Regional

NEW YORK – Junior Simon Jones finished in fourth place in men's epee, and senior Christine Whalen came in fifth place in women's sabre to lead Brown University fencing at the NCAA Northeast Regional at New York University's Jerome S. Coles Sports Center on Sunday.
Jones (Louisville, Colo.) went 15-8 overall in men's epee competition, finishing in the top five out of a field of 40 competitors. Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) charted a 13-10 overall mark, coming in fifth out of 49 competitors.
Supporting Jones in men's epee, freshman Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) placed 10th behind a 13-10 overall mark, and sophomore James Yoon (Austin, Texas) finished in 19th with a 6-6 record.
Behind Whalen in women's sabre, sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy) followed in seventh place with a 13-10 overall mark, and junior Lauren Altman (New York, N.Y.) came in 18th with five wins.
Sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced the Bears in men's sabre, coming in eighth place out of 40 competitors and registering a 12-11 overall record. Freshman Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) came in 25th and logged two wins.
In women's epee, freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) finished in 14th place and tallied a 9-6 mark. Junior Yoojin Cha (Seoul, South Korea) came in 21st with five wins, and senior Hailey Huddleston (New York, N.Y.) picked up two wins in a field of 58 entrants.
Senior Barrett Weiss (Barrington, R.I.) led the men's foil squad with five wins, and a 17th-place finish. Junior Robert Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) snagged a win, and classmate Kyle Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) came in 30th out of 33 competitors.
In women's foil, freshman Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) came in 15th place and totaled five wins while junior Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) placed 24th with two wins in a field of 43 fencers.
Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on the campus of Ohio State from March 19-22. The NCAA will announce participants on Tuesday.
Last year, Whalen and Jones each qualified for the championships. In 2012, both Whalen and Weiss advanced when the Bears sent a school-record six fencers to NCAAs.
