
Fencing's Jones Second in Men's Epee after NCAAs Day 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Simon Jones ranks second in men's epee to lead Brown University men's fencing after the first day of the 2015 NCAA National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships at Ohio State's French Field House on Thursday.
Jones (Louisville, Colo.), making his second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships, has recorded an 11-4 record through three rounds of competition while sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) has posted a 7-8 record to stand in 15th place in men's sabre.
Through three rounds, Jones has scored 72 touches and received 49 touches for a +23 indicator, tied for tops in a field of 24 competitors. He trails only Columbia's Jake Hoyle who has totaled a 12-3 record with a +23 indicator.
The epeeist notched a 5-2 record with a 31-25 (+6) mark in touches in the first round. After posting a 4-0 record in round two with a 20-7 (+13) edge in touches, Jones stood in first place with a 9-2 composite record and a 51-32 lead in touches. In round three, he went 2-2 (21-17 touches).
Palabrica opened with a 4-3 record in round one with a 29-28 edge in touches scored. He charted a 1-3 mark (11-17 touches) in round two prior to going 2-2 in round three (15-16 touches). After three rounds he has registered a -6 indicator with 61 touches received and 55 touches scored.
As a team, the Bears check in at 13th out of 20 schools.
Men's competition continues tomorrow with the fourth and fifth rounds beginning at 9 a.m. prior to the championship bouts at 1:30 p.m.
Brown's women's contingent of senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy), and freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) will begin competition on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Whalen and Tondato Da Ruos will compete in women's sabre, and Ferguson will take part in women's epee action.
