PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Eddie Fitzpatrick (North Attleboro, Mass.) tossed over six strong innings to lead the Brown baseball team to a 4-3 victory at Princeton as the Bears split a doubleheader to open the Ivy League season Sunday at Clarke Field.
Brown moves to 5-13 on the season and 1-1 to start league play, while Princeton now stands at 4-14 overall after an 8-2 win in the second game to salvage a split.
Game 1 (Brown 4, Princeton 3)
Fitzpatrick enjoyed a solid outing for the Bears in the opener as he allowed three earned runs over 6.2 innings to go along with five strikeouts for his first win of the season. Fellow senior Dave St. Lawrence (Thompson, Conn.) handled the final out to pick up his third save of the season.
Brown took advantage of three Princeton errors, scoring four runs on three hits, while Chad Powers took the loss for the Tigers.
Princeton established an early lead, scoring one run in the second and another in the third, before three straight scoreless frames gave the Tigers a two-run advantage heading into the seventh and final inning.
Brown came on late with four runs in the seventh, starting when Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) reached on an error and Joshua Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) followed with a walk. After Marcal and Huntley both scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) ripped an RBI double and Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly for the lead, 4-2.
Danny Hoy hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the frame to pull the Tigers within one, but St. Lawrence came in to get the final fly out and seal the win.
Game 2 (Princeton 8, Brown 2)
Levine and Huntley paced the Bears with two hits apiece in the second game, while rookie Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) took the loss as he allowed five earned runs over four innings. Austin French (Orange, Conn.) provided solid relief, allowing one run in four innings of work.
Princeton raced out to an early lead, scoring two in the first and three in the second for the five-run advantage over the first four frames.
Brown jumped on the board in the top of the fifth when Huntley launched a solo homer over the left field fence, but the Tigers answered back in the bottom half, as Tyler Servais also hit a solo shot to take back the run and maintain a five-run lead.
Brown added another run in the sixth when Levine hit an RBI single down the right field line. Nevertheless, Princeton kept the Bears at bay over the final three frames and added tow more runs in the eighth to take the win and split the series.
Brown continues Ivy League action tomorrow when they visit Cornell or a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at noon.
