ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) posted five hits, including three in the first game to help give the Brown baseball team a 5-4 victory, as the Bears split a doubleheader at Cornell in Ivy League play Monday at Hoy Field.
Brown moves to 6-14 overall and 2-2 in league play, while Cornell won the second game, 10-6, and now stands at 6-12 on the season and 3-1 in the league.
Game 1 (Brown 5, Cornell 4)
Kerr paced the offense in the first game, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while rookie Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) recorded a pair of hits and scored one run. Taylor Wright (Berwyn, Pa.) went 3.2 innings and gave up three earned runs for the no-decision, while rookie Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) earned the win in relief and Dave St. Lawrence (Thompson, Conn.) closed the final two innings for his fourth save of the season.
Brown scored early and often with four runs in the top of the second, starting when Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) scored on an error and Grigo crossed the plate on a ground out. After Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) walked, Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) smacked an RBI single to right center and Kerr sent in Henry with a sacrifice fly one batter later to give the visitors a four-run lead.
The Bears added another run in the top of the fourth when Kerr singled through the right side to send in Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) for the five-run advantage. However, Cornell came back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame and one more in the fifth to cut the lead to one, 5-4.
Nevertheless, St. Lawrence shut down the Big Red offense in the final two innings, limiting Cornell to just one hit to secure the victory.
Game 2 (Cornell 10, Brown 6)
Brown racked up 13 hits in the second game, while five different players had multiple-hit performances, and Huntley drove in a pair of runs. Senior Nathan Mann (Winter Haven, Fla.) was handed the loss in the relief for the Bears and Ray Brewster earned the win for the Big Red.
Brown went right to work with one run in the top of the first when Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) singled through the left side. The Bears added two more in the third, as Huntley doubled down the left field line, but the home side answered with one run in the bottom half to trim the deficit to two, 3-1.
Brown responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth. After Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) hit an RBI single, Sredojevic ripped a triple to right to send in another run before Henry hit an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to five, 6-1.
Nevertheless, the Big Red responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then rattled off seven runs in the eighth for the four-run lead. Kerr registered a one-out single in the ninth right before Shulman drew a walk, but Cornell's Paul Balestrieri posted back-to-back strikeouts to salvage a split in the series.
Brown continues Ivy League play on Saturday, April 4 when the Bears host Columbia in a home-opening doubleheader starting at noon.
