
Fencing Completes Competition at Day One of Ivy Round-Robins

NEW YORK – Brown University women's fencing earned three squad wins, and the men's team picked up two squad victories on the first day of the 2015 Ivy League Round-Robins on Sunday at host Columbia University's Levien Gymnasium.
The Bears went 0-3 in men's action and 0-4 in women's competition on the day. The men's epee squad registered two victories, as did the women's sabre squad. The women's epee squad won once.
The men's side started the day with a 20-7 loss to No. 7 Penn despite a 5-4 win for the epee squad. Brown then lost to No. 2 Columbia, 18-9, although the epee squad garnered a 7-2 win. The team closed the day with a 23-4 setback to No. 5 Harvard.
On the women's side, Brown opened competition with a pair of squad wins but fell to No. 8 Penn, 16-11. In the match, the sabre and epee squads each tallied 5-4 wins.
The women followed with a 23-4 loss to No. 1 Columbia and a 21-6 setback to No. 4 Harvard. In the closest match of the day for the Bears, the women's team narrowly fell to Cornell, 14-13, despite an 8-1 victory for the sabre squad.
For the men, freshman epeeist Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) led the Bears with a 6-3 record, tying for second in the men'e epee standings. Also in epee, junior Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) finished 5-4, and sophomore James Yoon (Austin, Texas) captured three wins.
In sabre, sophomore Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) won twice. In foil, senior Barrett Weiss (Barrington, R.I.) and junior Robert Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) each won once.
On the women's side, sophomore Clara Tondato Da Ruos (Milan, Italy) paced the women's sabre squad with a 7-5 record, standing in seventh in the standings. Also in sabre, junior Lauren Altman (New York, N.Y.) finished 5-7, and senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) went 4-8.
In women's epee, freshman Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) tallied a 7-5 mark to tie for seventh while senior Hailey Huddleston (New York, N.Y.) compiled a 4-6 record, and junior Yoojin Cha (Seoul, South Korea) won two bouts. For the women's foil squad, freshman Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) grabbed three wins while junior Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and senior Hannah Kolus (Burbank, Calif.) each won once.
Next, Brown continues competition at the round-robins tomorrow prior to traveling to the Temple Invitational on Feb. 21.
